Does Wellbutrin poop-out?

Posted by Buffet on January 12, 2001, at 10:57:36

Well everyone, I think I finaly found something that works for me! I was given luvox and it killed my already fragile sex drive. The doc tried me again on Wellbutrin, but this time at 300mgsr. Whoa, what a difference - sex drive way up, mood and energy way up. I was also switched to klonopin from xanax, and I would recommend the switch to anyone. The cravings and roller coaster ride with xanax is no more!

Anyway, to get to my question -

Does Wellbutrin poop-out, and if so can someone compare it to ssri poop-out?

It is working REALLY well for me and I don't want it to quit like all the other ssri's I've tried. And, since the search feature isn't up yet I thought it proper to ask the question that I'm sure has been asked several times already. Thanks for all of your help!

James here....

Poop-out seems to happen with most AD's, though not to everyone. I just stick with what works today and worry about poop-out when and if it happens.

From my experience, Wellbutrin is a little tricky. For me, at first I experienced an amazing response to it from the start, and then it stopped working suddenly. It turned out I had bipolar tendencies, and it wasn't until i started taking Wellbutrin again with Lithium and titrating the dosage up very slowly that it finally worked (and worked well!).

Many people experience a boost when first taking Wellbutrin, especially when jumping into a high dose. Don't get your hopes up too much, because this initial high DOES wear off.

Well, even if it does poop-out, it can regain effectiveness by adding Lithium, Buspirone, or Pindolol (all very proven augmentation drugs). I have personal experience with adding Lithium and pindolol to remedy poop-out, and it has worked with Parnate.

Dear SA4M,

Do you have any experience or knowledge regarding the augmation of Nardil when it poops-out?

I see Nardil poop-out mentioned far more frequently than that of Parnate. I realize that some, or perhaps all of the difference could be the results of prescribing practices. Nardil might be used quite a bit often than Parnate. I don't know what the statistics are. From my exposure to this posting-board and the anecdotes told me by clinicians, Nardil seems to be the one with the greater propensity to demonstrate poop-out.

What do you think?

Are there any augmentation strategies that would be exclusive to Nardil relative to Parnate?

I appreciate any insight you may provide. Thanks.

Nardil is prescribed more than Parnate because Nardil has less of a chance of causing insomnia.

I don't know which one poops-out more, but I had Parnate poop-out on me. It regained efficacy when I added 1200 mg of Lithium to it, but in two weeks it stopped working again. I think it would have been a good idea to go on to Nardil, but I insisted on moving to Remeron instead.

Pindolol does work, though. I take 20 mg per day in divided doses, and it works for me as an antidepressant on its own.

Scott,

Nardil pooped-out on me too in a big way! At first, I though i finally found the miracle drug I was searching for. Unfortunately, within three months all of the positive effects stopped and i found it was making me increasingly nervous. I tried to increase the dosage, but experienced hand tremors so severe i couldn't even hold a spoon. I eventually just stopped using it.

I tried it years later and it did little to improve my mood or cognitive abilities as it had done initally. I tried just about every AD on the market afterwards and none came close to helping me the way Nardil initially did. From what i read above, i may try it again and supplement it with Buspirone.

I suspect my experience is a common one. The fact that AD's poop-out and have long start-up times are important keys that still aren't understood.
