tranquilizers -always- necessary?

Posted by Christ_empowered on May 17, 2021, at 12:57:31

I mean, in schizophrenia-spectrum problems. i think the question is far, far more complicated in other indications.

I had a counselor, once...I'd honestly say the only truly, really and genuinely helpful counselor I've dealt with...who basically told me "meds are just containers for strong emotions. they won't fix anything."

at the time, I was honestly frightened to even consider dropping the tranquilizer. not because I was sold on the idea that a) mental illness always requires indefinite pill treatment or b) that I was in fact one the severely mentally ill, but because I was basically drifting thru an area where I was not a member of the community, and..yeah. rough psychosocial components, I guess one could say.

but now...well, my life has changed+improved, considerably. not that I don't have challenges, impairments...just...I don't know that tranquilizers are really going to help me with my set of needs, obstacles, etc.

I'm not gung ho, antipsychiatry. this isn't what this is about. its more about...wondering, is it really necessary to continue taking tranquilizers, indefinitely, across the board?

I could see the need if one has ongoing, more or less chronic positive symptoms, significant agitation, that kind of thing. That's...well, now, that's not my situation.

anyone have thoughts? experiences? thanks. :-)
