> I have been diagnosed with treatment resistive depression. Over the past 4+ years, I have tried almost all antidepression drugs available. I never get any benifits or side effects, no matter which drug, combination of drugs, or dosage. My Dr. now wants me to talk to another Dr. about ECT. I don't know very much about ECT but that sounds like it would be a last resort. Does anyone know of any other treatments available for TRD?

blue5150, don't know what AD's you tried. Other possible modalities include cognitive behavior therapy (shown to be very effective) and sleep deprivation (apparently it really reduces depression, for some people with TRD). There are various types of depression, and individuals respond differently to various AD's and treatments. If you could be a little more specific about what's going on with you, we could probably offer more suggestions. Is your depression dysthymia, or major depression, or bipolar type, or atypical depression? How have you responded to various AD's? Is your depression characterized by vegetative signs (sleep and appetite disturbances, lack of energy, psychomotor retardation, etc.) or depressive core beliefs (I'm rotten, the world is a bad place, things will never improve)? Do you have ups as well as downs? How far down do you go (do you think about suicide or wish you were not alive, or just hope things would get better so the pain will stop?). There are so many treatments and meds nowdays that ECT is usually a last resort, from what I understand. Have you tried tricyclics; tetracyclics; SSRI's; new atypical AD's such as Serzone, Remeron, Effexor-XR; MAO inhibitors? Hope things start getting better for you. A lot of people have "been there" on this board and hopefully can give you some suggestions for various treatments.--Cindy W (I take Effexor-XR, Serzone, and Seroquel, and am doing self-help cognitive behavior therapy since there are LOT of materials available for this; plus I see a pdoc every month for med management and for psychotherapy).
