university regulations

Posted by alexandra_k on February 12, 2020, at 23:45:28

so... you meet the requirements for the degree and you have thereby completed the degree. hooray!

except that all the people... the supervisor... the supervisory panel... the dean of the school of graduate research... the associate vice chancellor... the vice chancellor...

they all say 'no! you didn't! just keeeeeeeep working! and pay us more money within 1 month or you will never complete your degree!

the only people who think that it is accepted subject to substantive changes to be completed within 10 weeks are the two people who never met me, who were not involved in the production of it, and who were actually paid by the university to examine it.

both of the examiners were unanimous.

the NZ one set about many many many many many suggestions for improvement. okay. great. thanks for taking so very very very much of your time to write such a very very very very substantive report pertaining to a 120 point 1 year MPhil thesis. the overseas one was more explicit about 3 'substantive' changes (one being they wanted a definition of something).

the examiners were unanimous.

a year later...

the university literally up the road...

the people whose job it is to process my application to medical school decline my application on the basis of an *unofficial* transcript. they seem to lack the capacity to distinguish *official* from *unofficial* transcripts *that have been produced in new zealand*.

then the appeals process directs me to the director of admissions. the director of admissions also doesn't seem able to distinguish an *official* from an *unofficial* transcript -- and doesn't seem to understand the relevance of the University regulations or the reports of the examiners with respect to the issue of completion.

then the appeals process directs me to the dean of the faculty of medical and health sciences and supposedly to a faculty meeting. the faculty also doesn't seem willing or able to understand the relevance of the university regulations and reports of examiners. the faculty also is having some difficulty with the word 'univocal' or perhaps 'unequivocal'. they seem to think that the only opinions that matter are the opinions of everybody aside from the examiners.

because we are talking about medicine.

the rules don't apply!

we are talking about medicine!

we can do whatever we want whenever we want because we are in charge of medicine!

medical admissions!

picking all (and only) the students we want.

and i see there is constant in-fighting about the curriculum.

Maaori people won't let Maaori develop. Maaori people won't let chemistry teachers function in their communities because they don't want their kids learning chemistry. They want their kids learning brown-nosing and they want their kids crafting them trophies that they can claim for their own.

They have just enough control over the Medical curriculum, i suppose, to teach medical studnets why it is that their people don't have access to healthcare. Why their people don't have access to doctors. Why the 'doctors' they have in their community don't have access to the study materials or the training they need in order to effectively practice Medicine.

They learn that Maori are compulsory communal. That means the tribal leader or the husband or the uncle or the brother or whoever decides whether the woman has birth control.

You get the idea.

Or...

Or...

Or... It's about how we must spend lots and lots and lots of money chasing the hard to reach people. In other words, we must spend lots and lots of money forcing people who don't want 'healthcare' to have healthcare for their own good. You know. Because we can.

People are going out to immunise the kids, now. The 15 year olds against measles mumps and rubella. In the schools. Apparently the girls are told to stay home when they have their period and the school doesn't provide sanitary bins (and often the kids don't have satitary napkins or tampons anyway). So... Best just stay home and brownnose and craft something, okay?

Yes. Things really are that bad.

So now the appeal is with the vice chancellor of academic, apparently, who is the highest point of appeal within the Univerity of Auckland, apparently.

So, we will see if the Academic Vice Chancellor is capable of understanding the Univerity regulations pertaining to my Degree and the reports of the examiners. Also in putting those two things together and seeing what the outcome of examination is. Seeing that I have met the requirements for the Degree. Seeing that since I have met the requiremetns for the Degree the University of AUckladn is required to admit me to study Medicine.

By their enrolment deadline.

Of tomorrow.

Hey, thanks for giving me some *time* to *decide* whether I wanted to accept or decline my offer of place.

Otherwise...

I don't know.

What...

I send the Univerity regulations and the reports of examiners (not confidential to the University of Waikato at all) to everyone. All the Vice Chancellors of all the Universities.

I wouldn't waste my time so much with New Zealand. They seem to lack the capacity to understand and / or willingness to comply with the f*ck*ng regulations that they f*ck*ng wrote.

I wouldn't worry so much about Australia, either.

I would worry more about all the international collaborators that the University looks to as a source of finance.

All the people thinking of enroling in the University should know that the University doesn't seem willing / able to follow it's own process on completions.

In other words: There is no education system here.

THe people in charge of here refuse to do the things they are paid to do. Refuse to follow their own rules and regulations.

For f*cks sake.

The VC is paid how much.... Hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Apparently the Vice Chancellor of the University of Auckland is paid more than the Prime Minister of this country.

He has built slum apartment block after slum apartment block after slum apartment block.

He has introduced an 'alternative entry' path into Medicine where there is no Bio-Chemistry or Cell Biology for Maaori -- just a bunch of brownnosing and crafting essays where the students are required to spout back lecturers powerpoint slides (plagarise lecturers powerpoint slides).

What a f*ck*ng joke.

I just can't belive it...

I mean, I knew that people bullied people about.

But I didn't know that people would actually *violate their own regulations* if the bullying tactics didn't work.

The last VC has stood down. After being VC for 15 years. After the University went from around 66th world ranking to more around 200th.

There was something about a student having a mental health episode, being an inpatient, being raped... Having her enrolment terminated by the University because she didn't let them know in a timely fashion that she was having a mental health episode.

Then, apparently the VC publically stated that he spoke with her healthcare team (not sure under whos authority) and they recommended to him that she have her enrolment terminated and not be allowed to complete her Degree.

She is trying to get to finish her Degree. Since, you know, her parents invested much money in her Degree thus far and it isn't trivial to arrange a transfer to another country to finish the NZ qualification over there (gee, I wonder why not).

That's how f*ck*ng bad things are, here.

The VC earns more than the Prime Minister and there are no VC Scholarships. There is no VC fund to help studnets in need (ie this girl). There is only exploiting others for his own advantage and continued pay increased every year.

It is inhumane.

He had pay increases every year while laying off teaching staff. While closing down libraries.

He hired people incapable of parsing reports of examiners.

He hired people who passed studnets plagarising their lecture slides.

He approved courses that taught students never (under any circumstances) to reference properly (so anybody would know you were capable of referencing properly).

I suppose he kept the studnets examiners reports as trophys.

I think the Auckland process (unofficially circulated via their webpages) is that the reports of the examiners are confidential to the studnets supervisory *panel* and the *panel* decides whether the studnet has done enough or is required to (no surprises here) hand over more money and keep working...

What a f*ck*ng joke.
