I never did learn to cook - wish I'd had that home economics class in high school or something!
I have tried...and I have made some REALLY disgusting food!

Good luck!
hint: make sure the 'sugar' you use is really sugar and not salt - I made really nasty brownies like that once ;-)

Simply put... I haven't. What little cooking I do (eggs, stir fry, and forays into baking) involves much precaution and worship of recipes. I often have to remind myself that at least I'm not dealing with dangerous chemicals like in a chemistry lab, so I can probably pull it off... but then, there's no risk of, oh, you know, dropping an oven mitt onto the element during a lab.

My life would be much simpler if only the oven operated like a CD drive.

Used to cook when my kids were young. No one taught me. It was trial and error. And now I won't cook at all. Hate it. Fondly, Phillipa

I learned so young I cannot remember..I raised my two little brothers so I learned simple stuff(grilled cheese, soup, heating ravioli-does that count?) and my 1st pregnancy w/ my now 10 yr old, I was soooo bored on bed rest that I started trying things out that sounded good (some were off the wall as I was pregnant..lol) Now I use my gramma's recipes! My mom never cooked but my g-ma sure can!

I don't usually cook. I live alone and depression just doesn't lend itself to cooking projects. BUT, if you need simple cooking advice, you should buy "The joy of cooking". I know people who swear by it b/c it has lots of details written out and it is written very simply. A good investment. If I ever start to cook again, I'll use my copy! :)

Best,
EE

When I got married I would call my mom or my mother-in-law when I wanted to cook something. They would tell me how to cook it over the phone.

Start slowly and start with easy recipes. My mom forced me to learn with a very easy tactic. It was called "if you want desert, you have to make it".

I did manage to mess up jello and make lumpy instant pudding but in time I tried new things and it got easier.

As for spices, as you make more recipes you will notice patterns in the pairing of food items or spices. The recipes change but are often based on the same patterns:

- Basil and tomatoes
- Cinnamon, nutmeg and clover with pork
- Cinnamon and apples
- Rosmary and lamb
- Oregano and tomatoes
- Vanilla and pears
- Vanilla and bananas
- Almond extract and peaches

Eventually it will become sort of second nature. You will be preparing some food item and you will have an intuition as to what goes well with it. You also have to trust your nose. Smell the food item, smell the prospective spice, does it seem like a good pairing? Trust your intuition but go slowly. It's always easier to add more than to remove spices.

Paprika can go well with fish or eggs ... though unless you get really good quality it's pretty much tasteless. Though it does add a nice red colour.

Thyme can go well with meats like beef. It can also go well with chicken and mushrooms which are pretty much tasteless by themselves.

Parsley is good with anything tomatoe. The dried stuff is pretty tasteless but the fresh stuff is also good to add to your garlic butter or to accompany osso bucco (a veal and tomato based dish)

Dill goes well with fish, especially salmon. Also matches well with cucumbers.

Cumin ... I can't say that I've used it much aside from Indian type dishes like currys. I think it's also used a lot in Mexican food.
