About my boycotting these boards until Larry Hover is reinstated as a member in good standing.

Thank you,
Jay

I think it is sweet that you are trying to support Larry but...

have you heard of the expression about cutting off ones nose to spite ones face?

and I have to say that such a move will only be counter-productive if Dr Bob thinks you (and others who join you) are attempting to manipulate him or force him to change his mind by subversive means...

Power in numbers...that's it, if Bob doesn't like it or not. Larry went through emotional hell dealing with this...I am here to collect for that. (-) (Mouth taped shut)

That is true. But there are an awful lot of Babblers out there... I don't think ALL of them would be persuaded to leave for the 'cause'. And even if most were (which is very unlikely) more will come, more will come. Posters are not a scarce resource. In fact small boards have even been suggested because there are so very many posters here.

And...

What doesn't kill the boards makes them stronger.
It might be counter-productive...

Yes. I know Larry is having a really hard time of it at the mo. But thats not completely about Babble and his Babble block. I do not believe that Dr Bob intended for Larry to be in the horrible place that he is in at the moment. I think Dr Bob intends to try to deliver (fairly) predictable and obvious consequences for infractions. First offence - warning. Second offence - blocking. What suprises me is that people actually thought he wouldn't get blocked for that.

Really.

But that being said - Larry is in a horrible place at the mo. I think there are more appropriate ways to offer support than to turn on Dr Bob and turn away from the other posters here, though. I liked Jenny's suggestion of him being able to at least read posts he might appreciate. And for people to keep checking on him and supporting him with the other modes of communication that are open to us.

Please do that people.
I am rather worried about him.

I just think that this move will be counter-productive.

I think we would be more likely to have success with getting the block lengths changed for FUTURE offenses so that a similar situation doesn't arise again. IMO... This particular situation can't be changed now. It has been 3 weeks already :-( And I don't see how it can be changed without it being seen to be about Larry's popularity more than anything else.

Dr. Bob, please don't let Larry die. Please please please let him back and apologize or whatever if it will save his life. I don't know how upset Larry was, but maybe he was very very upset like I was. I don't care if it is inconsistent with the rules as long as Larry will be ok. Please reconsider your blocking policies, as Jay's quote proves that blocking people can be very dangerous. I don't want any more lives risked.

Back up. Larry isn't going to die. He is going to be ok. He is going through a hard time and needs some support. Thats all. And it is up to US to support him. Not Dr Bob.

If Dr Bob makes an exception because he thinks someone will kill themself or whatever for getting a blocking then before you know it everyone who doesn't want to be blocked will be threatening suicide.

Attacking people and threatening suicide to avoid the consequences.

It can't be done :-(

Hey...are you talking about me? I know that. I know there's no way to avoid the consequences. My p-doc told me being blocked is like going to jail for shoplifting...it doesn't matter why I did the crime or who I am, I still have to go to jail no matter what. I get it.

I just wish I could do more to ensure Larry makes it through this time. It's difficult when one cannot communicate with the other. I just wish there was a better way to punish people without blocking them.

> Hey...are you talking about me?

No, I'm talking to you. Trying to explain why Dr Bob can't take how someone is going to respond to a block into account in deciding whether they should be blocked or not. If he did that it would have disasterous consequences for the boards.

> My p-doc told me being blocked is like going to jail for shoplifting...it doesn't matter why I did the crime or who I am, I still have to go to jail no matter what.

Yeah. Though you can try to explain things via email. I think that generally tends to help more with understanding why rather than changing the situation, though.

> I just wish I could do more to ensure Larry makes it through this time.

Yeah. We can only do what we can.

>I just wish there was a better way to punish people without blocking them.

Yeah. Me too. I can't think of what though.

I'm sure he appreciates the support he's getting. In addition to helping him through this time, might there be some way, if he chooses to come back, to help him not get blocked again?
