How can a dog manage to eat two little pieces

Posted by TamaraJ on July 3, 2005, at 12:00:01

of cheese, and yet still not swallow the antibiotics that were put in their mouth before the cheese? My dog is a crafty little thing I tell ya. She has had to be on antibiotics for the past week, prior to, and following oral surgery, and getting her to swallow those pills is an exercise in futility! The cheese goes down, no problem. But, sure enough, POP!! out come the antibiotics. Oh, and not to mention getting her to come when it is pill time!! Poor little thing is so confused - hmmm, there's cheese, but, wait, there are also pills. Decisions, decisions LOL.

Talent. Pure talent.

Have you tried the "shove it down the throat" approach? Use two hands to open the mouth - if you grab the upper and lower lip so that the lip is between your fingers and the teeth, the dog will open his mouth (cause his teeth are cutting into his lips...). I use my right hand on the bottom jaw (I'm right handed), and hold the front of the bottom jaw with my last 3 fingers while I use my thumb and forefinger to put the pill on the very, very back of my dog's tongue. Then hold his mouth shut while you stroke his throat. THEN give him the cheese. Then wash your hands...

Good luck!

Yup :-) That is the approach I have been using -pry open her mouth, put the pills as far back on the tongue as possible, close mouth, rub throat, watch her do what appears to be swallowing, give her a piece of cheese for being a good girl, watch her swallow cheese, and then POP - out comes the pill (most of the time, one does get down, but a few times, both have come popping back out LOL). At least I'm persistent :-) - probably more persistent and headstrong than she is (and she's pretty darn headstrong LOL).

Thanks, fallsfall. I'm thinking that she might actually be a bit upset when she doesn't have to take them anymore - no more cheese LOL.

When we had pills or capsules to give the dogs, we'd ball them up inside some Braunsweiger (liver sausage). They virtually inhale it, never chewing, so never detect the pill inside. If you have other dogs, just give them a ball with nothing inside, as a treat. This always worked.

I think this is why cave women invented the mortar and pestle...for grinding up antibiotics for their dogs.

Try grinding/smashing it and put it in peanut butter.

Good luck! em

Smashing and grinding in peanut butter is a good idea.

I think it can depend on what your dog is like with food. Some eat quite fussily and others will virtually inhale food.

From when my dogs were puppies I'd give them a vitamin tablet in a piece of cheese. The pills were flavoured too - but I wanted to get used to them throwing back pills so it would be easier to get them down them later in life. I taught them to catch the food and they'd gulp it down without even chewing. Worm tablets and other varieties of pills were never a problem after that.

But that being said I've heard of some dogs that just won't do it. They spit it out and have to give it a sniff before nibbling at it.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I was thinking about the peanut butter thing, but luckily, tonight I got them down in one fell swoop. Yipee! Hopefully, I won't have any problems tomorrow. If I do, peanut butter it is LOL.
