Many Californians are watching your bushfires with horror. The Carr fire was a pyrocumulonimbus event. Four hours start to finish, and the town was gone, shooting embers miles away, like your recent bushfires and Black Saturday (in Victoria?). California is so densely populated, and our winter is shaping up to be dry.

Interestingly, Russia has said they will adapt to climate change. So they acknowledge the existence but not the cause. To say outright it is Anthropocene would give up hydrocarbon sales.

Morrison is toast, I'm almost certain. Who might be in the running? Now, if we could only dump trump...

We have seen through him.

The ALP was spooked by Queensland and Adani, so not them really.

There's Dutton.

There is an opening for someone to seize the moment. It will happen eventually.

The coal thing shouldn't be so difficult. No new thermal coal mines ever. Phase out the existing ones. Real support and jobs for those who have to change. Coking coal is different, I think.

The area burned here is huge, but the fires may not be worse than the Californian ones. They moved pretty fast.

One of Counterpunch's virtues is publishing writings by a wide group of people including Andrew Bacevich, self described as Republican, conservative and Judeo-Christian.

We may all recall this......

Then, in 1988, a year prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, in testimony before Congress, NASA scientist James Hansen issued a far more alarming warning: human activity, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, was inducing profound changes in the global climate with potentially catastrophic consequences. (Of course, a prestigious scientific advisory committee had offered just such a warning to President Lyndon Johnson more than two decades earlier, predicting the early twenty-first-century effects of climate change, to no effect whatsoever.)

I don't understand what is going on with the Trump indictment, thing, not even a little bit, not at all.

In other news, North Korea has been painted pretty severely in the newspapers over here, for quite some time. Making it sound like we were on the brink of war and making it sound like Korea was in fact making nuclear weapons that it intended to use in the very near future.

Then there was a picture of the leader on the most beautiful white horse you ever did see treking with this beautiful woman (his wife, apparently) on a twin horse up some mountain for a reflective pilgrimidge that he apparently does often...

And then the news 'he has stated that he is not willing to trade away the security of his people, for anything, at all'.

So... There we go.

Growing pains. Or something...

Not much is remembered about that war.

There were 4 buildings left standing in the north after the bombing.

McCarthur was given the boot for suggesting to Truman that 25 atomic weapons be dropped across the neck of the peninsular to keep the Chinese out.

The beautiful woman is, I think, Kim Jong-un's sister. Yes, that is a gorgeous horse! It's fed better than the citizens.

I don't know what's going on with the impeachment. Nothing. Going to the senate for summary dismissal.

Trump says he and Kim fell in love. He really did say this. More than once. Very weird. His supporters are weird. His corporate supporters are just greedy capitalists.

>He really did say this.

It might be a test for his followers. How much of this can they stomach without complaint? He's probably not trying to entertain me.

Ive studied it better than anybody I know,

I never understood wind. You know, I know windmills very much. Theyre noisy. They kill the birds. You want to see a bird graveyard? Go under a windmill someday. Youll see more birds than youve ever seen in your life.
Theyre made in China and Germany mostly,
But theyre manufactured tremendous if youre into this, tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything.

You talk about the carbon footprint, fumes are spewing into the air, right? Spewing. Whether its in China, Germany, its going into the air. Its our air, their air, everything, right?

You see all those [windmills]. Theyre all different shades of color, he said. Theyre like sort of white, but one is like an orange-white. Its my favorite color, orange.

The presidents war on wind is not new: earlier this year he was ridiculed for his claims that wind turbines destroyed property values and caused cancer from their noise.

You know what they dont tell you about windmills? After 10 years they look like hell. They start to get tired, old, he said, lamenting that owners of ageing windmills not replacing them without government subsidies was a really terrible thing.

We get the same ideas minus the flair your president brings. We may have had an enquiry into whether or not wind farms cause cancer.

Now they are talking about a Royal Commission into the fires.

What is a Royal Commission?

We both know he's not sound. Really not. What is wrong? We're an insane country! Now Biden. I avoid all the polling crap the US revels in, but apparently he's doing well. Warren not as much. See? People don't want a competent president. That Overton window thingy. Trump or a bad facelift is preferable to a socialism light.

Time to let the young give it a go.

(For clarity, looking *old* is preferable to facelifts. They almost always look weird. I feel uncomfortable when I criticize people's appearance tho :( so I wanted to say something.)

Finland and a four day work week!

A royal commission is an official enquiry to determine the truth and propose recommendations. You would have something analogous.

People keep mentioning Adderal when they talk about the president. Maybe it's just not working, or is ineffective for dementia? Years ago he was lucid.

To be clear, the results of any royal commission worth its salt would be the recommendations of the scientists.

Yeah, it's interesting. Maybe years of the world revolving around him have diminished his intellect. That and some dementia or another addling. The Adderall thing I'm not completely sold on. He did do some clubbing drugs, (cocaine?), and there is that weird breathing thing when his dominance is threatened. During the last presidential debates, this was both hysterical and alarming. There's speculation he will avoid debating this time at all costs.

That said, he was always crummy and ridiculous. Both my parents were better off not knowing of his presidency. Especially my mother who despised him (as many NYers did).

Michael Moore said New York should have 'taken care of trump', or something to that effect. That Michigan would have none of his sort of malarky. I don't know Moore is right about everything, but he can make me laugh. It's a real sort of oy vey humor. Different than the understated wit of your country (which I also like very much).

About Morrison. It seems years that he's been Prime Minister when his election was only this year.

Morrison's approval has gone down, not by as much as one might think, and most importantly, not with his supporters.

This parallels what is happening with you.

I don't know what would have to happen to change their minds. Maybe it would require the burning of every residence they owned? Or maybe a severe 5 year drought followed by a continental fire? The Great Barrier Reef sure won't do it.

Morrison makes more sense to me than Trump. He's no better.

Was it Jacob who came before Pharaoh? And God hardened Pharoah's heart so as not to let them go, until the first born boy of every house was taken by the Angel of Death. And after that he did it again maybe?

Do these people know their Bible?

I wonder if we will just get used to it.

Well, it's like you said in the title above, and what it calls for is courage rather than optimism.

I just find it awfully hard to accept the politics and the (lack of) responsibility.

Listening to youtube programmes about the dinosaurs kind of helps. Basalt lava flows the size of all Europe, Pangea breaking up into the continents, huge temperature changes.

I think it was Moses.

Moses who was trying to get the Pharaoh to let the people go.

And he would not.

Or, at one point, he would, but then he changed his mind and set chase.

So Moses parted the dead sea so the people could cross. The Isralites.

Then he unparted it, and the Paroahs men were consumed by the Ocean.

___

Jacob...

I think Jacob was something about in a prison. He had dreams. Or the King would consult with him about the meaning of his dreams.

Something like that.

____

I read the Bible. All of it. When I was around 12 or 13.

Because I was going to these Christian Youth Camps in the holidays. There were some pretty serious Christians. And I was starting up on the smoking and heavy metal and so on. And, there were some holiday Christians who had their feet in both camps, seemingly.

Anyway... I took the whole being saved thing very seriously. And I read the Bible.

So I could make an informed decision about whether I wanted to be saved or not.

Huh.

At some point I agree. Then did the whole wishy washy thing.

Too much guilt. Should have been a catholic haha.

Then I didn't believe anymore.

But it took longer for the guilt to subside.

And longer, again, for morality to develop in response to reasons.

Why am I thinking 'Jacob and the technicolor dreamcoat'? I think that may have something to do with Biblical Jacob.

Read something once when you are 12. Sigh.

oops. Jacob was Josephs father. It was 'Joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat' and it was Joseph that was imprisoned unjustly.

It's all become pretty murky. (I'd forgotten all about Moses.)

Due to time constraints my only dipping into the Bible (funerals) is with Ecclesiastes, and you don't have to start at the begging for that.

The Parable of the Talents is another puzzling one.
