Where is my faith

Posted by Lamdage22 on December 13, 2013, at 6:36:21

I kind of lose faith in the fact that life is eternal. And i kind of took my belief that life is eternal as an excuse to do things without looking at the aftermath.

I dont want to suffer.

Smoking for example. God i wish i could quit the damn smoking.. "smoking can lead to a slow an painful death".

Im not interested.

Life is eternal, but not ours.

Why do you come to that conclusion?

Life has existed for a long long time and we are part of it. We are just this stuff that is living now, as stuff has lived for so long. The living goes on. We do not, if by 'we' is meant personality. But life certainly goes on and always will, until the sun blows up at least here.

Have you heard this song about death?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-0lV5qs1Qw

'And I lift my glass to the awful truth
which you can't reveal to the ears of youth
Except to say it isn't worth a dime.'

Meaning there is no foundation.

Since we rejected religion we need to make our own meaning, having sawed off the branch on which we were sitting.

Some people say that what we have as personality is not our true self. Its just how we react to society around us. That our essence is eternal.

What do you mean "we rejected religion"?

C19, Darwin, that sort of thing. The Enlightenment maybe.

By "we" Sigi generally means himself and those who agree with him ;)

For now we see through a glass darkly but then we will see Him face to face and we will be like Him.

I don't think eternal life is chronological infinity or the same thing three zillionth verse. That would be pretty depressing. Maybe something like St Augustine's eternal present? Like St Simeon I want to look into His face. That is enough.

I prefer this song about death

This is quite brilliant.

What does the word "faith" mean to you? Did you ever have faith? What was that like?

I suppose you could act under the premise that there is no eternal afterlife. So, just in case it turns out that consciousness is finite, it makes sense to live the life you have as painlessly as possible and to look for the joys that surround you. I try to live in the present and hope for a rewarding future, partly by coming to terms with, and learning from, the past.

Idyllic?

Perhaps.

It works for me. However, it is not always easy for me to keep it all together. It is MUCH harder to pursue answers to the questions you ask while in the midst of a mental illness. Be merciful with yourself and give yourself permission to be uncertain.

What would happen if you were to let go of your need to believe and simply give yourself plenty of time to work things out. It might take years for you to construct a temple that hosts your soul best. I am confident that you will find your own unique spirituality. You appear to be very motivated.

Yes it is good, but it is from a Julian Barnes book I have to say.

The US is different, but I wonder even there if there is that old certainty that existed before the C19. It is one of the best things about novels, how they can explore, over time, the painful passing of old certainties that go with modernisation. At the moment I am thinking of Orhan Pamuk and Victor Serge.

I feel like most of us here ... we are suffering with incredible pain and ... we beat ourselves up so badly. Lamdage, I'm guessing you have tremendous faith, a faith in life even though life treats you horribly. Your smoking, I'm guessing, is just a way to treat your physical and psychic pain. Smoke is just a delivery method for a drug. If nicotine makes you feel better, so be it. Doesn't mean you do not have faith. At least, not in my book. I can't speak for Mistress Goody Temperance down the street. (I don't think too many of those exist anymore, except in our minds.)
