black cohosh - whats it used for?

Hiya there folks, I came across a packet of St John's Wort + black cohosh combined, and I was wondering what exactly does black cohosh do??

I used to take Black Cohosh with Ginseng - I seem to remember that it was sedating by itself.

It's often used for PMS symptoms and menopause - especially hot flashes.
