Psychobabble MIDI download, make it stop!

Posted by Tabitha on June 10, 2016, at 13:42:07

Lately when I load any page on this site, it automatically downloads a file called psychobabble.mid, then psychobabble(1).mid, psychobabble(2).mid, presumably on into infinity. It's not in my browser cache-- it actually puts it in my user Downloads file. I never saw this before. Does anyone know how to turn this off? I updated my babble mail lately, so that might have been the event that triggered it.

Thanks. I set Music Automatic to No and it didn't seem to make a difference. Hey, I wonder if erasing cookies would help... I think I'll try that later

Same here! I looked at my downloads and the first is dated 6/9/16. I updated my mac around then and had an awful glitch around the Garage Band app, which I didn't want in the first place.

So I've opted out of bob's audio, changed my posting name, dumped the app, and. Gaaagh! No change except my laptop asks to open the midi file with quicktime (I think that's it).

Yikes, I wonder what's going on. It seems like the babble code has been updated, but that doesn't seem likely since Bob is nowhere to be found.

Phillipa, if I hit "show all downloads" I see the long list of psychobabble(N).mid files. They are going into my default Downloads folder.

I've had no luck fixing this or finding a workaround. Deleting cookies didn't help, although it did mess up all my "new" indicators.

I'm surprised I can't find any info about this issue happening on other sites. I think Bob's site is just really old code, and support for something has been dropped in Chrome or some service that it uses. Such are the hazards of using a website that isn't being maintained...

Yeah, Quicktime can't open it because the files are too old. It suggested I load an obsolete version of itself in order to open the files. Maybe that's why that stupid Garage Band app would glitch.

Are you saying the MIDI file itself is some old format that is incompatible with the current Quicktime? That would explain the problem, assuming my browser is using Quicktime plugin to try to open it.

I have windows media player associated with .MID files, and it is able to play the file if I open it (outside of the browser) after it downloads. Perhaps there's no windows media player plugin for Chrome at this point.

I don't know of a way to block the downloads. If you find a way, please let us know.

So today, instead of seeing a new psychobabble(N).mid file automatically saved in my Downloads location, I see an explorer Save As pop-up, with "psychobabble", MIDI file as the default.

I didn't change any Chrome or Windows setting. No idea what caused this new behavior. It's even more annoying than the old behavior, since I have to clear the pop-up to continue.

The Psycho-Kitten extension for Chrome eliminates the MIDI download, as well as improving the spammy posts here.
