not getting new indicators.

Posted by special_k on March 22, 2006, at 17:15:38

ok so finally... i can post from my own personal computer :-)

so now my problem is... where have all the new indicators gone?

i see new posts...

but i'm not getting the yellow flags.

why is this?

makes it really hard for me to find new posts...

would i be better to still log on and off the server?

Your computer's set to accept cookies from Babble, right?

'cause if it's not, don't think the site can distinguish which posts are new for you each visit...

I know privacy was/is a concern, but this is *your* very own pc, right? Hmmm, seems I recall another reason the yellow flags don't show up, but my memory fails me....

> Your computer's set to accept cookies from Babble, right?

Yeah. Because it does just keep on accepting 'em.

> 'cause if it's not, don't think the site can distinguish which posts are new for you each visit...

Yeah. The trouble isn't that everything is marked as 'new' though, it is that nothing is marked as 'new'. It is remembering which posts I've opened (purple instead of blue) but just no new indicators on the new posts.

> I know privacy was/is a concern, but this is *your* very own pc, right?

:-)
Yeah.

> Hmmm, seems I recall another reason the yellow flags don't show up, but my memory fails me....

I thought to have a look in the FAQ and... The plot thickens. Why is nothing ever simple? Sigh. I'll try to figure it out from there, thanks.

ok so the stuff in the FAQ is about when everything is new. i think that is right... when everything comes up with a new indicator but it shouldn't.

i'm not getting that problem, i'm getting the opposite problem of not having any new indicators even though some posts ARE new.

i deleted my cookies and my temporary folders.

the problem isn't just with babble it is with hotmail too.

in hotmail you get 'todays messages' or somesuch. mine don't come up there anymore (like they used to) but i find i have unread messages in my inbox - but they aren't shaded anymore. they don't seem to have anything to indicate that they are actually new messages.

with babble (after deleting cookies and temporary folders) i go to a page and everything is new. then i refresh the page and all the new indicators go away. then i refresh the page again and i see that there ARE new posts on the board but there aren't any new indicators.

the links i've followed are a different colour (purple instead of blue or whatever) but no new indicators on new posts.

so... if it is remembering which links i've clicked on why doesn't it remember that wsn't there before and put a new indicator on it?

thought it might help to save cookies to theserver and log on and off. but that isn't working for me anyway. i'll get new indicators of new posts from the time i logged off... but no new indicators for new posts in the time i am logged on.

i'm using internet explorer on windows XP.

any suggestions gratefully received...

(if i ignore you its probably cause i didn't spy the new post)

ak!

It sounds like a cookie issue. You can try going to:

http://www.dr-bob.org/cgi-bin/pb/extras.pl

and using the "display cookies" button to follow what happens to "babbletimes"...

ok so maybe this says something embarrasing about how much time i've been spending on here today but:

babblename special_k

er... how does that help me?

is it helping anybody else?

ps i notice that when i try and 'delete cookies' from the site (in the extras) the button doesn't seem to be working. i know i have cookies enabled 'cause i get cookies. re javascript not sure what that is but if it has applets in it that might be blocked again 'cause i still don't think i can access open etc.

java problem help

Posted by special_k on April 6, 2006, at 21:37:03

i think it is a java problem...

i found this:
http://www.fixmypconline.com/

worth a pop?

er...

not getting new indicators on posts.
if i clear cookies and temp. folders and history...
i get new indicators.
i get the links change from blue to purple (and that is remembered okay)
but if i refresh the page no new indicators even though there are new posts...

last couple days the problem has progressed...

i can't open hotmail emails.
i put the curser over the link and this little txt thing comes up on the bottom left says something... has word 'java' in it...
try and click to open hotmail
and nothing happens but the message changes to 'errors on page'

argh.

i dunno know what is wrong :-(
running windows xp
and internet explorer... not sure what version but i think it is most recent...
i didn't used to have this problem...

started since...

wireless connection over here.

before that didn't use it on the net very much...
but it was working ok.
