> What does science say?Hmmm..well, I am an Adult Educator, no real hard science. But, I think you should be careful with Glutamate. Glutamate, or l-glutamate, are precursor's to NMDA, and mood stabilizers and other's are NMDA antagonists.
Just IMHO, YMMV, etc..

Sometimes it converts into glutamate, sometimes into GABA. Does that depend on mineral cofactors?

Ok. Isnt there a glutamate hypofunction hypothesis of schizophrenia? My issues have a tendency towards that diagnosis. I do take Neuroleptics.

Memantine is a NMDA-glutamate antagonist, and can cause mania.

A certain degree of excess agonism at glutamate receptors is excitotoxic.
I said NMDA does not occur naturally in the body, but the Wikipedia article claims it functions as a neurotransmitter:
