Any experiences using a compound pharmacy?

Posted by Gabriel14 on March 31, 2021, at 15:41:42

I'm curious if anyone has tried using a compound pharmacy for their antidepressants. (I specifically have bupropion in mind, but am curious regardless of the antidepressant in question.)

My thinking is that with drug company medications there seems to be so much variability from one batch to the next in terms of where in the world the medication was manufactured and dispensed from, which could potentially lead to inconsistent levels from one batch to the next.

With a compound pharmacy, on the other hand, especially one that's local to you, you'd know and have a hopefully trusting relationship with the actual person or people who are making your drugs. And, of course, there would potentially be the ability to customize things in a way that you can't with drug company medications.

Anyway, curious to get folks' thoughts on this, especially anyone who has ever gone down that route. Among other things, curious if this is even doable!

I've used a compounding pharmacy for low-dose naltrexone. Some compounding pharmacies are better than others. I don't know where you live, but here are some recommended compounding pharmacies in the US, Canada and Scotland:

the brand wellbutrin xl was pulled a couple years ago, because of quality control issues. -ugh-

tenuate? i did a search on The Google, and apparently it is used 'off label' by psychiatrists for mood elevation, now and then. Schedule IV, generic available, refills are possible if the treating doctor is OK with it, etc. some insurance plans won't pay for diet pills, but it does seem to be rather inexpensive, out of pocket.

just brought it up because...the internet also tells me it is closely related to wellbutrin, but it would probably be fast acting and I don't think there's much of a seizure risk (?).

for whatever reason, bariatric physicians do not seem particularly fond of it, compared to phentermine. and now we know. lol. :-)

but seriously, there -are- options out there, assuming the physician in charge of your treatment is willing to try other psych drugs that could help ameliorate your depression. provigil, focalin, maybe some of the more stimulating tca (not if there is an OD risk, of course...), on and on and on....

just seems like a rough thing, looking into compoudning pharmacies and lab testing, etc., over a drug in depression that basically elevates mood...

thru mild stimulation.

hope this helps. good luck! :-)

Many thanks for this advice. Brand Wellbutrin XL was pulled at one point?!? I've been on it for about a decade and never heard anything about this happening. Are you sure you aren't talking about one of its generics? If you have any articles that you can share, I'd love to check this out and find out more.

oh...I'm sorry. it's a generic, and it is the 300mgs xl.

Any results? I stopped before I could get any. I was scared off by a comment saying it is "human experimentation". The low dose is not studied as much. But yeah, no risk no fun. Thinking of doing it again.

Enhancing endorphins sounds pretty neat to me.
