Amphetamine improving schizophrenia / mania

Posted by linkadge on April 1, 2021, at 17:53:11

Amphetamine can lead to schizophrenia like symptoms. On the other hand, amphetamine acts as a TAAR1 agonist. TAAR1 agonists have shown some positive effects in schizophrenia.

I have heard case reports of amphetamine improving schizophrenia and mania. I wonder if this is the mechanism.

when vyvanse 1st hit the market, they did a small study in stable, medicated people with Schizophrenia. I think the goal was to help with depression and negative symptoms, plus whatever adverse effects this group had from meds. and...if I recall correctly, with carefully selected people and carefully controlled doses, it worked reasonably well. which...

is -not- ground breaking. ritalin was popular for those on sedating neuroleptics in the 60s. in the 50s-60s, maybe into the 70s, diet pills (read: amphetamines, sometimes amphetamine and sedative combos) were routinely used in everybody, including those with a label of Schizophrenia.

I dunno about mania. I read on some old school shrink's website that he'd used dexedrine in some cases of acute mania...something about reducing distractibility, maybe? i dunno. sounded creepy, like medical torture to me, but dude man was adamant that it 'worked,' however he chose to gauge success.
