Can you be in remission while you are on meds?

Posted by Lamdage22 on March 23, 2021, at 6:45:59

Hey guys,

I am bothered a lot by my diagnosis. I haven't had Psychosis in 8 years, but I do take neuroleptics. The diagnosis leads to everyone not taking me seriously, which is not right! Now my question is would you call that remission? Thinking about asking my psychiatrist to change the diagnosis. It is harsh that I have to ask. When you label someone that forcefully, you should check without being asked wether or not it is still the case.

My diagnosis right now is schizo-affective and I want it changed to "Schizo-Affective, Psychosis in complete remission".

Or changed to something that reflects that I haven't had psychosis in 8 years and am not likely to have it again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, you could be in remission from (say) multiple sclerosis, yet not be in remission from seizures.

If your disorder is schizoaffective, then (in my opinion) you would need to be free from virtually all mood and psychotic symptoms to be considered 'in remission'.

Ok, but Psychosis/Positive Symptoms can be in remission though, right? So it could go something like that: Schizo-Affective type depressive, Psychosis in remission.

i think back when the state hospitals were still in widespread use, "Schizophrenia, in remission" was a fairly common diagnosis upon discharge. and now..

-sigh- here in the US, where I live, I think its more likely to get stuck with "Schizophrenia, residual type" than anything else. Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective are now understood (by consensus...) to be lifelong, requiring non-stop treatment, etc...

so, even if some of the so-called 'residual symptoms' are probably drug induced (say, sleeping too much, mild social withdrawal, etc.), the tendency seems to be that sort of diagnosis, because...

its not the 60s or 70s, lol. I think its stupid, but it lines up with what Szasz writes about psychiatric treatment and such reflecting dogma, ideology, norms...not -medicine- or science. and yet...

off to refill my 'atypical.' :-)

you should change doctors, my doctor does the same thing, she is a total b-itch, needs to slapped so hard she'll go back to medical school.

change doctors and get social work, or talk to a counselor

i've been on depression, and for a while when i went into the hospital, they said bipolar but they we'nt specific about it. They also said psychosis, but i have nothing to do with it. A long time ago here babble,, i posted about not being treated for ADHD, being taken stimulants, well here i am 18 years later. I take bipolar medications but i'm not bipolar. But what i...i just said fine and stuck with it.. Anwways i've been to diffrent doctors. Right now i take mainly mood stablization meds. I just stuck with it. One doctor tends to stay with one diagnosis, it's a bit odd but, that's how seems to be. After they see you for a long time.

Well, without a diagnosis of the schizo/psychosis type, I wouldn't be allowed to receive two antipsychotics. This residual stuff that you mention was brought up by my psychologist.

Yeah, it is easy to get angry with your treatment providers. However, they have more pull. Not sure if I should change psychiatrists. He is the only one that trusts the FDA as he trusts the EMA. Which I think is rational. I am hoping that Aloradine turns out to be helpful. This could change my life for the better dramatically. Another Psychiatrist means waiting 1-2 more years for new treatments.

For me the question is, do the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. And I think they do.

'Schizophrenia, residual type'

Would "residual type" be considered less severe than what I now have? Would it tell professionals that I no longer have psychosis? Then it would be an absolute improvement!

Im just not sure how that would mix with "Schizo-Affective". I want to present a strong case to my psychiatrist. The Psychologist suggested it so I surmise he would support the proposition.

To me, "residual type" tends to mean without psychosis, but technically it doesn't have to -- there can be "residual" psychotic symptoms. There is also a "deficit syndrome" that refers to a condition of negative symptoms.

Some Diagnoses don't translate precisely from the APA DSM to our german one. I think residual for us means mostly negative symptoms, too. If I had been diagnosed with Schizophrenia it would be easy, but they say I'm Schizo-Affective And only the "Schizo" part of that is greatly diminished. Maybe I am overthinking it. Diagnoses are not perfect, both the application and the DSM itsself.

I just want people to reckon that I am accountable. Thats all. I am not saying everyone with regular Schizophrenia diagnosis is not accountable, just saying it sounds like it, especially for the less educated. And I haven't had positive symptoms in 8 years.
