SLS + All: Vitamins, Vegetable causing Depression

Posted by PCB on March 20, 2021, at 13:47:21

Hey SLS/Everyone,

I think we take some similar medications such as lamotrigine, nardil and lithium. For at least 10 years, if I take vitamin pills or more than a handful of vegetables, I get a moderate depression the next day. Actually, I took a whole bag of spinach once and steamed it. That cause depression for 7 days.

I have always thought it might be Folate(Vitamin B9) that reverse lamitcal's effect because of the study that showed Folic Acid reverses lamitical's antidepressant effect(https://www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/hold-folate-adjunctive-lamotrigine).

Do you have this problem? Anyone have any ideas? (I have though of just buying every vitamin tablet and testing them all, although I never do it because even one day of depression is awful)

Thanks,
PCB

When I do take vitamins, I have to take very small doses. Higher doses do make me depressed.

My hunch is that vitamins tend to be pro-cholinergic. That being said, if I take lower doses of vitamins for a longer period of time, I tend to feel better (after a few weeks).

I once was on a multivitamin that made things worse. Also, high dose B3 made me worse. It happens to me a lot that supplements make things worse. However it is usually over quickly after I quit.

If it doesn't agree with you don't do it. Try something else. If it can be afforded, blood tests help to figure out what probably is good for you.

I would say though, that many multivitamin supplements are very high doses and hence can start to behave like drugs. Also, sometimes if a supplement is normalizing things, it can, at first, make you feel worse. I do believe that meds / and the disease itself can lead to deficiencies in certain nutrients. However, I think the best way to address this is by taking lower dose supplements, in a pulsed fashion, over longer periods of time.

Every spring, I notice that my mood gets much more raw and I experience increased emotionality and anxiety / insomnia. I have noticed that restricting sunlight and (surprisingly) taking choline is actually helping me. Zinc and DHA are also supplements that agree with me.

I have had bad experiences after a single megadose of calcium.

This makes sense on a very simplistic level. Calcium and magnesium antagonize each other at calcium channels and thus inhibits glutamate release.

Great feedback! Couple of things

1. Do you know what blood test would give me an answer Lamdage?
2. Does anyone get the symptoms with vegetables? I can tolerate a half of a Roma tomato and 5 leafs of Kale at lunch and dinner. But if I add any more vegetables, I feel worst the next day.
3. I can tolerate Vitamin D without any problems

I have never met anyone with this problem and no psychiatrist has reported see a patient with this.

Thanks!

You just don't want to eat your vegetables (kidding).

No, but seriously, there could be some kind of allergy (if you're having that immediate a reaction).

That would be a start:

B12
Magnesium
Zinc
Selenium
Vitamin C
Ferritine
Iodine
Omega 3: EPA/DHA
GSH (Glutathion)
Antioxidants (Oxidative Stress)
Vitamin E
Vitamin A
Vitamin D
Tryptophan
Phenylalanin
Tyrosin

It is conceivable that you react to chemicals in your spinach. Have you tried organic spinach? It is gernerally a good idea to nurture your body with all the nutrients it needs. It will almost certainly work better if you do. And the body includes the brain so yeah, there you go.

just thought I'd mention this...

The Orthomolecular 'experts' say that one should supplement basically -all- essential nutrients. that way, when intake of one (or...several...) is ramped up to high levels, overall "balance" is maintained, because vitamins and minerals are "team players."

maybe you have a deficiency, and upping intake of some vitamins exacerbates symptoms? random, not at all 'expert' thought.

Yeah some nutrients suppress others. I haven't really thought of that.

Hey PCB,

i react to Spinach as well... although differently. I read up on it and Spinach contains oxalic acid. Spinach is not as healthy as people think. So maybe switch to something else.

Don't get discouraged with nutrients and healthy foods though!
