Why is it debatable whether you're of a depressive type? Seems to me it should be pretty obvious if depression or mania is the main problem.

It is not an issue with any other vaccines, right? I think it would be fine.

Could you get the vaccine, Phillipa? I probably could in a few weeks, two months tops. A piece of paper from the doctor with my diagnosis would probably be enough. My father is scheduled for Thursday. I am wary of it and hope it will be fine!

Mentally, it is not like getting a flu shot, although maybe it should be.

I am scheduled for March 15. That is if they have the vaccine. Seems they are cancelling people due to shipping it's said from The heavy snows and bad weather across the USA last week. But since they go by health care workers and age. I am in the first tier. But they haven't finished this tier and yet the are opening new ones for on the NC side teachers now. They should finish what they started first. Most of the older neighbors here have already gotten either one or two doses. Still have my doubts about the long term side effects of a drug that was rushed and just released here for Emergency authorization. No animal studies were done first. So I guess the animals being used are human beings. Phillipa

You are scaring me a bit. My father is scheduled this week to receive the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine. I conciously did not interfere with his decision making process. If I told him something and he would get sick because of my advice, that would be awful. I hope it will be alright. I wish it wasn't necessary to make that decision.

Your Dad made his own decision just like I will have to make my own decision. I'm sure he will be fine. So far those that I know get sore arms, fever, and aches and pains or flu like symptoms for a few days and some people got nothing but the sore arm, some not even this. Phillipa

Are there any drawbacks to telling the public health authority your psych diagnosis? That would get me the vaccine much miore quickly. I can always call it off if I deem it dangerous.

I felt I might have a fever in the night following the vaccination. I also experienced a bit of muscle ache around the injection site.

Something like that is probably what you can expect.

Yes it is. My appointment scheduled over a month ago for Pfizer just got an email and text that cancelled due to lack of vaccines . Now on a waiting list. Also there are many reports of swollen lymph nodes under your arms. Due to that when females schedule mammograms they are advised to wait 4-6 weeks? Why do you suppose that is? Phillipa

I suppose it is due to immune system activation.

I hadn't thought of that, but yes, it may be a good sign, indicating that the vaccine is doing something.

The vaccines get the immune system exposed to a bit of the virus protein on the surface so the immune system finds a bit of itself (some B cells) that can make antibodies that bind to it.

Then the body makes clones of those B cells... And they hang around. The second dose of the vaccine makes sure the 'memory response' (the number of B cells capable of making antibodies) remains high.

Then, if you are exposed to the actual virus your body should be able to identify that and crank out antibodies fast enough to keep the viral load down so that you don't get sick from the virus and (hopefully) so that you don't pass the virus on to other people as well.

The B cells live in your lymph nodes. And... Spleen, I think. so you might get a swelling there are the B cells that live there undergo the colony expansion of making lots of memory B cells that can make antibodies against the virus.

I think that's the rough idea...

So it depends where the B cells in your body capable of reacting ot the virus live. I don't know if all of the bodies immune response capability is in every single lymph node... Or if it's that some people happen to keep the cells capable of responding to the Corona Virus surface protein that they are using for the vaccine response... IN their auxillary lymph nodes, in particular.

The side effects are ones associated iwth your bodies immune response as your body detects an antigen and tries to encourage you to take it easy for a couple days to help the body prioritise getting proteins and nutrients to the immune cells (it uses a lot of protein to make antibodies).

If I was in the US and felt I had access to competent healthcare (as it sounds like you do) then I would get a vacine yes.

In this part of the world we have to worry about so much in the way of human error and so on... They can't process applications to medical school... They undermine the public confidence.

My dissent is political becuase our nation insists on refusing to develop medical capability by refusing to process applications, refusing to train the workforce, refusing to pay the workforce and so on and so on and so on...

I wish I spoke other languages. Particularly Chinese.

I wouldn't want to be responsible for what anybody else does, either. Not if they were capable of making their own decision. That's too much of a weight to bear if you get it wrong. For sure.

Alex, you are the only person that has explained exactly how the vaccines work. I had no idea about the B cells and lymph nodes and spleen. Please post any other scientific knowledge you have on the vaccines. So if you were living in the US you would get the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines then and feel safe? Thanks Phillipa

it's not exactly all the knowledge... it is only little bits an pieces of it, as i understand it, as i study immunology at undergraduate level, and as I try and understand the content studying for the Step Examinations (Step one towards a 3 step examination).

There is still a lot that I should know -- but I don't.

Mammograms detect masses in tbe breast / auxillary region. So a mammogram might detect a mass that is benign (nothing to worry about) during an acute phase of response to vaccine. That is to say, your lymph nodes in your axillary (armpit) region might be temporarily swollen as your b cells are reproducing (colony expansion) to develop your bodies capability to crank out antibodies against Coronavirus if you ever encounter exposure to it in the wild.

The mammogams cannot tell the difference between a swelling due to cancer and a swelling due to normal antibody response to a virus.

As Pathoma says (a guy from University of Chicago who has a Pathology studybook towards step one exam): Only a pathologist can diagnose cancer.

That means that you need to get a sample (a bunch of cells by way of a biopsy or very invasive swab that scrapes off a bunch of cells) to the laboratory for a trained pathologist to take a look under a microscope and say whether the cells are cancerous or not.

They can do genetic testing of the cells, too, to see if they have genetic abnormalities indicative of cancer.

But the first step is a biopsy sample of the tissue so the pathologist can take a look. And to decide whether to send a sample of tissue to the lab... They need to see a swelling or a hard node on mammogram. But the trouble is that temporary or transient normal immune response to vaccination looks like swelling to to be further investigated...

So... If you mammogram is clear...

Then you get a vaccine...

Wait for your immune response to settle before getting another mammogram.

I think that might be the take-home.

With repect to which vaccination... I don't know enough to believe I can make an informed decison about the mrna vaccines vs waiting for a non-mrna vaccine. In other words... I think the way they are rolling it out is respectable / reputable . You have the power to decide... But probably nobody knows enough to know which is the better idea. Which is precisely what makes it worth them trying to find out. It's not subjecting the underclass to the intervention (or lack of) known in advance to be inferior. It's genuinely an open question.

Some of the wealthy elite have been trying to use their privaledge to jump the cue.

And others of the wealthy elite have been trying to use their privaledge to refuse vaccines when offered (as is their human right).

Sometimes...

Reasonable people can disagree.

And sometimes it's not clear what the best course of action is (whether one is looking out for onself primarily or looking to the group primarily).

I think I would take the vaccine if I had quality of life in the USA.

I think... I won't take the vaccine here.

But I fear that my rights will be taken away by teh government. I'll lose my right to travel etc. So eventually I will be forced to comply.

ANd I'll be forced to spend my days documenting the war crimes and atrocities of the NZ government. Because they refuse to allow me (and others like me) a way of life.

And they refuse to process applications and completinos etc to medicine to ensure their people never have medical treatment or informed consents.

Alex weren't you attending Chapel Hill at one time for medical school? Why did you not continue here then and become a citizen or stay on VISA. You are absolutely brilliant. So the take home is that the vaccines are safe and worth getting? Did you hear that there is now a New York variant? And that Moderna is already working on a third shot for variants a booster shot?

If you are now studying immunology are there more facts that you either hypothesize or know of any long term damage that can occur from the vaccines. Like why did that ob-gyn in Miami develop the thrombocytopenia and die 16 days post vaccine which was Pfizer?. You give me so so much to think about. Thanks and please more Phillipa
