Coffee consumption decreases lamotrigine levels:

Highlights

A robust prospective pharmacokinetic study demonstrates an interaction between lamotrigine and coffee.

Coffee consumption decreases lamotrigine area under the curve and maximum concentration.

Cigarette use does not change lamotrigine area under the curve and maximum concentration.

Abstract
The objective of this analysis was to determine possible interactions between lamotrigine (LTG) and coffee or cigarette use. As part of the statistical analysis of factors influencing LTG pharmacokinetics (PK) in the Equigen chronic dose study, we collected prospective data from enrolled patients on their use of coffee and cigarettes. Subjects were part of a crossover replication study of generic LTG products with rigorous blood sampling and were instructed to not change their typical consumption of these products for the duration of the study. A total of 35 subjects were enrolled, with 33 subjects having sufficient data for analysis. Higher consumption of coffee was associated with a significantly lower area under the curve (AUC) and maximum concentration (Cmax) of lamotrigine (LTG). Higher cigarette use did not result in a significant change in AUC or Cmax. Coffee, but not cigarette use, either induces LTG metabolism or inhibits LTG absorption.

So I just saw this. I drink coffee pretty much all day everyday and also take Lamictal. It's been that way ever since I started Lamictal in 2007, though. I'm probably used to whatever changes my coffee consumption makes, but still going to keep it in mind....

Perhaps it's time for me to trial a coffee break just to see if it keeps my mood more stable. I've been rapid cycling the past yr+ (ugh). Good days, bad days, good days, bad day, good day, bad days, etc etc etc.....really frustrating.

i take lamictal too, it seems to be more antidepressant mood stablizer - it's known as the 'diva' med for mood swings

coffee and lamictal work for me too, seems to synergy with stablization

wonder what lithium and coffee is like, lithium increases serotonin but is anti-mania

Bipolar 1 = Lithium
Bipolar 2 = Lamictal

Would anything good come from low dose lamictal? I don't want (and can't afford) any cognitive side effects, which I had on 200mg.

You seem to be particularly vulnerable to adverse effects. I guess you are right to be careful. But at least you didn't get the rash.

For me each experiment with this stuff is quite dangerous.

100mg was a good dose of Lamictal for me at one point. It's a very beneficial drug. I take 200 now. Under 100mg and you'll likely experience a benefit that subsides after a few weeks....typical until you reach an adequate dose.

Prob w/ Lamictal is the generics are across the board as far as side effects/efficacy. There used to be one generic (Teva) that most people did well on. They stopped making it in 2018. Since then some people have issues finding a good alternative. Once you get used to a certain generic don't let your pharmacy switch you or you'll likely have issues.
