Disulfiram for Lyme Disease

Posted by Prefect on January 14, 2021, at 17:38:59

Although it's a drug against alcohol dependency, it has lately been showing more promise than available antibiotics for treating "chronic lyme disease". A warning though, it seems to cause temporary psychosis in some people. There are a lot of articles on this on the internet; here's an example:

I remember from my research a long time ago that disulfiram inhibits the enzyme DBH (dopamine beta-hydroxylase), which converts dopamine to noradrenaline (aka. norepinephrine). Therefore, it might be useful in conditions of dopamine deficiency, including depression.

Yes, it appears this is why it causes temporary psychosis in some people, due to heightened dopamine levels.

My doctor has been using disulfiram (Anabuse) to treat Lyme disease for at least a year. He has had more success with it than doxycycline.

I'd have to look into it, but I think disulfiram actually kills the critters.

It does kill the microbes (Borrelia burgdorferi).
