NMDA Antagonists NOT so good in psych!!

Posted by jay2112 on December 21, 2020, at 20:13:08

Glutaminergic antagonists, like Lamictal, Lithium, Topamax, etc, decrease glutamine activity in the brain. The 'reward' drugs, like all opioids, amphetamine, ritalin, and such, increase glutamine activity. I have found, in the past, a small amount of the amino acid glutamine, helps elevate mood. Too much makes me irritable, though.

I honestly cannot tolerate Lamictal and Topamax, for any length of time, or dose. I respond well to opioids, amphetamine (Vyvanse and Dexedrine), and such.

So, I wish psychiatry would get off the NMDA antagonist bandwagon. No wonder so many feel like crap on these drugs. Yes, I know, many like them, but I see on Facebook many are on Lamictal, all dosages, and don't feel very good. NMDA antagonists *increases* use of opiates...heroin, in particular. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3426813/

So, I am going to experiment with small doses of glutamine and asparate. Lamictal has ruined my days, constantly, for over 2 years, off and on. So has Topamax. Yuck. For me, anyways.

Well, I don't think it is as simple as "NMDA-antagonism = bad".

Memantine is a NMDA-antagonist, and it is one of the most powerful antidepressants I've tried.

Not to mention ketamine! A powerful NMDA-antagonist.

Yes, you are right....that is like saying serotonin=happiness.

I read that partial, non-selective NDMA antagonists, seem to work quite good. Memantine, like it's 'mother', amantadine, are both partial NMDA antagonists. I think I was just getting too much antagonism.

I read that Magnesium is a strong NMDA antagonist. Calcium is the opposite, an agonist, partial. I have tried Magnesium dozens of times, and always feel like crap, afterwards. Calcium puts me to sleep. So, I am going to try another NMDA agonist, d-serine. (Which actually works good in people with schizophrenia, though I (don't think??) I don't have that...

There are a few problems with a blanket statement:

Some of the NMDA antagonists (like ketamine) actually increase glutamate in certain brain regions.

Dopamine agonists can reduce glutamate (and hence induce glutamatergic hypofunction resembling schizophrenia).

Lithium has a push pull effect on glutamate (stabilizing glutamate reuptake).

Of course, not all mood disorders are characterized by high glutamate. Also, it also depends on the brain region.

For me, there are times when ritalin helps tremendously. There are other times where I have to stop it.

lamictal never did much for me, but topiramate has been really good at keeping my appetite under control when I take medications that would otherwise have me eating everything in sight.
I havent noticed any mood effects from either one.
