nuerontin vs lyrica

Posted by rjlockhart37 on November 10, 2020, at 21:29:03

from what i read, gapapentin takes a longer to work than lyrica, and you have to take 3-4 time a day when lyrica is just 2 or 3. Lyrica is controlled V, so it has some abuse, or controlled act. Nuerontin seems to be the older brother that's dorky and not as effective as his newer lyrica. But there both used for diffrent things

Lyrica (pregabalin) and Neurontin (gabapentin) are both considered derivatives of the amino acid gaba, and pretty much work the same way. Here in Canada, Lyrica is not a controlled substance. I have horrid anxiety, and Lyrica really relaxes me, and chills me out. Way, way better than most benzos. Just like a, now legal in Canada, cannabis infused jolly-rancher does on a stressful day.

The government, trying to control all these meds, is silly, I think. I work as a rehab and addictions counsellor, and have a major problem with the government trying to make every drug illicit and illegal. All's that does is fill up jail cells, and clogs up the justice system. IMHO...

Yeah I do notice Nuerontin, it's better than nothing and it relives social and depression anxiety, lyrica is more potent and its more bioavailability, the more gabapentin you take the less bioavailability. It's for nerve pain and shingles pain, which partly lyrica treats also. But yea lyrica is stronger, mainly because more bio-available it is. They have a new form of gabapentin called 'horizant', its a pro drug of nuerontin and its more bioavailable.

lyrica is controlled in the US, but its a controlled V substance, less limited, but the fact they listed it as a controlled means it has better mood improvement, or and also abuse. In some states in here in US, they made nuerontin a controlled v substance, because of mixture of opaites and it. But i'm in texas, no controlled here

Since gabapentin inhibits its absorption it makes sense to take it in spaced doses. Say 300mg and an hour later another 300mg.

The 2 drugs feel pretty similar apart from that.

aside from the extra doses (if needed, more day long sedation), I don't see much difference. lyrica has been more popular in the UK and EU than in the US, at least for core psych indications (agitation, anxiety, co-treatment of depression and more severe disorders), and...

-sigh- predictably, long term treatment can result in a definite discontinuation syndrome upon stopping. and predictably, -some- treatment providers have loaded people up, then rapidly tapered, leaving -some- people in states of extreme misery...

and that's probably going to result in more restrictions, warnings, I'm guessing litigation, maybe (?) at some point in the not so distant future.

i dunno. i"m prescribed a baby dose (max: 300mgs/daily) of gabapentin. i rarely take it. now, my psych person is eyeing me with suspicion for even having a prescription...

and yet I get refills. ugh. Psychopharmacological Puritanism bothers me, even though I don't currently need the gabapentin (most days), much less anything that might actually --- gasp! --- prove the least bit "fun."

blah.

Can you take it occasionally?

I took 800mg of the dose about 2-3 hours ago - it takes a little while to work, but i feel like a relief from tension, and the nerves feel relieved. It's used for nerve pain, not sure if lyirca is, its used for fibromialgia, but yes lyrica is more direct than gabapentin, i took it for a while in 2010, i was on 75mg, yes it was relief and partly mood improvement

I hear you. Yes, there is some tolerance that set's in, with both Lyrica and Neurontin. But that is the case with pretty much any med. Lyrica is especially helpful for my extreme agitation. (I am bipolar 2). Neurontin has run it's course with me. Benzo's do help, but tolerance quickly builds, and they can also cause severe depression.

But I could never quite understand the thinking behind just prescribing a powerful antidepressant without also rx'ing a solid mood stabilizer. Flooding the brain with powerful neurotransmitters without having something as a brake, is what I believe is a true 'chemical imbalance'.

Gabapentin doesn't do much for me. It's relaxing somewhat but gives me edema. Lyrica was terrific when I experienced GAD. Superior to xanax.

I've also read that Lyrica outperforms gabapentin for spinal pain and neuropathies.
