Damage from one-time meth use

Posted by amd on November 5, 2020, at 11:53:19

First off, let me say that I've just entered a treatment program. So I'm not looking for a response like, "Well, you shouldn't be doing this or that." I realize that, and it's why I'm in the program. :-)

I smoke some crystal meth two evenings ago -- probably two or three hits off a pipe. I combined this with cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana. I ended up staying up about 30 to 35 hours before I crashed.

What I want to know is, having never done crystal before, what kind of long-term damage might I have done? I feel absolutely toxic today, tired, depressed, and jittery. I feel hopeless, frankly. Did I completely ruin my brain from the few uses that night?

Don't worry about that. I've been up several days, maybe a week.

Very little damage. Long-term use at high dose does produce significant damage though.

No, you didn't. What you are describing is a typical "come-down" syndrome. It is normal fatigue, from having stayed up long, compounded by the withdrawal effects of the drug. Meth releases dopamine, which produces a high, but this drains the stores of the neurotransmitter, and it will take some time before the levels are back to normal,

If the low persists, it is hardly due to physical damage, but more likely due to a failure of homeostasis, which means there is a chemical imbalance remaining, and this may mimic depression (or burnout). This, however, is too early to tell in your case.

That said, however, there is also a possibility that the drugs you took were contaminated with more toxic substances. Some toxins *can* produce rapid damage.

Thank you for your supporting words.

Any specific examples? I know it's often a scare tactic to claim drugs are cut with a lot of toxic ingredients, but wouldn't that just be bad for business?

Want to add my agreement with the OP. You are having a comedown. I'd be a mess if I hadn't slept for almost two days even w/o meth.

I also wouldn't worry about the toxic substances. While not rare, they certainly would not have repeat customers. I'm glad you're in treatment, and not for any moral reasons on my part. Taking care of yourself is good.

Street worker here....OK, just one use of crystal meth should cause no worry. Many snort or inject amps on a regular basis. They are not "zombies" like tv-land portrays them. A number of my clients are speed ball users for many years and many are actually very functional, and active in the community.

"Illegal drugs" aren't much different than "legal drugs".

it will fade, i've done the same thing couple times in the past, after m-th wears off your tired and feel depleted for long time. The body eventually goes back to regular functions, but chronic meth users have damaged dopamine, but still i've met meth addictst and they had a personality, it's not like it stupifies you by damaging everything. It's a rough ride, but if your depleted l-tyrosine, sam-e, and l-methyfolate will supply nuerotransmitters

i felt the same way, but evnetually like weeks later go back to normal.

It would be bad for business in the longer run, yes. However, consider the possibility that an amateur chemist synthesises the drug, using reagents that are toxic, and he/she neglects to purify the product, either out of incompetence or a desire to avoid effort. However, I don't know if any fast-acting poisons are ever used as reagents.

I think it's more likely that the drugs are tainted voluntarily with additional substances to make the drug more addictive.

I've only used 'street' marijuana once or twice. I one instance, I'm fairly certain the drug was tainted with an opiate.
