Yeah who knows....

My mother took a turn for the worse. She had a stomach bug about 1 month ago and it threw her mental health right off. She went down to the ER today with my father as she was slurring her words and suicidal. She may have had a mini stroke (hopefully not).

I hope you're doing well.

Maybe people realize that there is no cure to be found in psychiatry for most of us. Realizing this must not be a bad thing.

She got back from the hospital last night. They ran some tests and said she did not have a stroke. Her moods are very volatile. She can be smiling one minute then crying the next. It's very difficult. She has always been a bit attention seeking so I don't know for sure. I think she is probably depressed and might need a low dose antidepressant.

So glad your Mom did not have a stoke. Any concrete reason for the mood swings? No physical problems correct?

No physical problems that they could detect in emerg. I think she's lapsed into depression, but not 100% sure. She cries a lot and complains of pains, but she is not really specific about the pain (i.e. location, intensity etc). She has a lot of difficulty speaking too (sentences that are not complete). The problem is that it all came on very suddenly (following a 3 day bout of vomiting).

Link that is very strange. Is there another doctor like a neurologist you can take your Mom to see? Vomiting caused all this. Electrolytes are okay?

Link quick google search on vomiting for three days?? Any other symptoms?

Psychological conditions that can induce nausea include:

anxiety and related disorders
depression
anorexia nervosa
bulimia nervosa
Alongside nausea, anxiety can lead to lightheadedness, diarrhea, and frequent urination.

Yeah, all the tests (including electrolytes) came back normal. She is going to see a few specialists about her pain, but she wasn't experiencing this before she got sick.

I personally think the illness triggered a relapse in bipolar (coming off meds for a few days), but there still could be something physical to explain it.

Link where is the pain? So your Mom does have a diagnosis of bipolar illness then. So you could be correct. What type of specialists is your Mom going to see? Phillipa

Yes. She was diagnosed as bipolar many decades ago. She is going to see a back specialist and a gastroenterologist. Her moods are all over the place and she reports pain in her stomach (but its somewhat nonspecific and it seems to 'vanish' suddenly for hours at a time).

I don't recall bipolar being associated with non specific pain. When does your Mom see the gastro doc? Back pain also? Phillipa
