How achieve MAO inhibition of smokers?

Posted by Lamdage22 on August 20, 2020, at 7:04:18

I am craving cigarettes once again although I get my nicotine from vaping. What can I do about it?

Coffee + cocoa also contain the beta carbolines that tobacco does (to a smaller extent). You could try MAOI inhibiting herbs like fo-ti or rhodiolla. Careful with fo-ti though. It can start to feel like a traditional MAOI.

Therapeutic MAO Inhibition led to psychosis in the past. Smoking only inhibits MAO by 30%. But it can still have an antidepressant effect. 30% would be my goal. I was even thinking 15mg Phenelzine (because I love me some Gaba-T inhibition as well) but I think I will get the middle finger by my psychiatrist! I have gone on and on about how Phenelzine has hurt me. And it has.

I hear you. I had a hypertensive reaction to parnate (despite following the diet) and was taken off. However, it was working for me. I don't think I would get a 2nd chance. I have used MAOI herbs before (even in conjunction with SS/SNRIs) without any problems. If you're looking for GABA-T activity, you could try substances containing rosmarinic acid (i.e. rosemary). It is a gaba-t inhibitor with known anti-anxiety effects.

I have Cytochrome P450 issues with all of the options mentioned including rhodolia and Nardil. Ineteracts with my meds below. Maybe I should be more careful about introducing new substances.

I get more cocoa than the average person in self made protein shakes. Does decaffeinated Coffee work, as well?

Yes. Decaf also contains beta carbolines.

A low dose of selegiline or rasagiline may be a choice. I think the MAO inhibition in smokers is mainly of the MAO-B variety.

What about harmala?

Im wont get a pharmaceutical MAOI after my history with them. And a hallucinogen may be problematic. What if I took some low dosr tryptophan or even 5HTP? I am on 75mg Trazodone and 37.5 Venlafaxine. I like low dosing serotonergics to avoid sexual side effects. Maybe I can raise my monoamines that way? Seems more natural. Im also trying to add Tyrosine and Phenylalanine to my diet.

Not sure if coffee is enough.

Yeah, you might be able to get away with taking a very small amount of 5-htp or tryptophan. I wouldn't push it though. Even though you are on a low dose of effexor, you can still get an appreciable inhibition of the serotonin transporter at lower levels.

Whenever I am unsure, I always dissolve the supplement in water and take slow sips throughout the day to see. Tyrosine and Phenylalanine would likely not be an issue. Just watch your blood pressure.

I agree that pushing it is not what I want

Harmala is not itself a hallucinogen, but is sometimes used to potentiate the effects of the latter.
