New finding about Botox for depression

Posted by Hugh on August 4, 2020, at 1:08:56

The team [at the University of California San Diego] focused on reports covering Botox treatments in sites including forehead, neck, limbs and bladder, and applied a mathematical algorithm to look for statistically significant differences between Botox users and patients who received different treatments for the same conditions.

[The team] found that depression was reported between 40 to 80 per cent less often by the Botox-treated patients.

"For years, clinicians have observed that Botox injected for cosmetic reasons seems to ease depression for their patients," said Prof Ruben Abagyan.

"It's been thought that easing severe frown lines in forehead region disrupts a feedback loop that reinforces negative emotions. But we've found here that the mechanism may be more complex, because it doesn't really matter where the Botox is injected."

Further research is now needed to determine the mechanism by which Botox acts as an antidepressant, though they suspect that it could be transported to the regions of the central nervous systems involved in mood and emotions after injection.

Current treatments for depression include psychotherapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, however, these are ineffective for nearly one-third of patients. So, it's vital that other options, such as Botox injections, are investigated, the team says.

Yeah, this actually not new news. There were some earlier studies (a year ago) suggesting the same thing. Botox can also help migraines. I wonder what the mechanism is.

There have been reports for over ten years that Botox injections between the eyes and in the forehead can lesson depression. It was thought that if a person couldn't frown, he/she wouldn't be able to feel as depressed. What's new about this study is that it didn't matter where these people received their Botox injections. An injection ANYWHERE in the body had a good chance of having an antidepressant effect. It's now believed that Botox has a calming effect on the central nervous system.

Here's the study:

Interesting.

According to wikiepdia:

"it prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction and thus causes flaccid paralysis."

This may mean that there may be some central anticholinergic effect. Although, I have not heard any reports of any central anticholinergic like side effects (i.e. memory loss). I take minute quantities of belladonna extract (anticholinergic) from time to time to treat depression.
