Dermatologist said Eczema ?

Posted by linkadge on June 27, 2020, at 7:52:17

Hey,

I saw a dermatologist today (online). She was quite informed and asked me a million questions. I showed her the pictures of my legs and she said that it was eczema. I am not 100% convinced, but in doing more reading on eczema, it seems to make a lot of sense.

Antifungals have done nothing, but (interestingly) I've been putting ginger root and coconut oil on it and for the first time in a few years it has been improving. The dermatologist said that actually made sense based on the anti-inflammatory effect of ginger root.

Anyhow, long story short, the rash did start at the time of a major stressor and (apparently) there is a link between mood and eczema (systemic inflammation).

If this is true, there may be a common link between my worse mood and this rash over the past few years.

For example, interleukin 1-beta is linked to both mood and dermatological reactions.

I'll keep you posted.

Could this be side effects from drugs?

It's believed that the microbiota plays a role in eczema.

https://www.niams.nih.gov/newsroom/spotlight-on-research/role-microbiota-eczema-findings-suggest-striking-right-balance-keeps

Recent studies have found that a prebiotic mixture that you can make yourself can have a "remarkable" effect on your health.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2019/07/11/740820882/a-mix-of-these-foods-could-restore-healthy-microbes-in-malnourished-kids

This prebiotic mixture is composed of chickpea flour, peanut flour, soy flour, green banana flour, sugar, and soybean oil. All of these ingredients can be ordered from Amazon.

Here's the study, which has information on the doses that were used:

It could be a rare(r) reaction to a psychmed.

Thanks for that information. I will look into it.

It's interesting that the occurrence of this rash corresponded with a relapse in my mood. I'm sure there is a connection (either some inflammatory pathway or, as you mention, gut microbiota).

It could be, but over the past 2 years, the only med I had been taking consistently was lithium. I know it is occasionally linked to psoriasis, but eczema...perhaps.

Hi Link,

Did you get your steroid cream and some emollients?

It's very strange. I started applying ginger root powder mixed in coconut oil. I have seen substantial improvement in the past 3 weeks (I've had this for 2 years solid). The infected regions have completely cleared over.

I still have the script for the steroids (betamethasone), but am holding off to see how far the ginger root will take me. I really should post before / after pics - it's quite dramatic.

It's not perfect, but there is much improvement. The skin is a bit darker (some discoloration, or simply tan). Here are the before/after side by side. Literally all I have done is applying ginger root powder mixed in coconut oil. I've had this rash for 2 years and literally NOTHING else has made this kind of improvement. Fingers crossed.

It looks like you are on the way to recovery. This confirms my theory that you should keep an open mind about what might help you. How do you feel physically? Any malaise?

What about taking these systemically? Maybe on the inside they will help, too?

I wonder if these two substances would help you (also psychologically) if taken by mouth. Ontop of applying them to your skin. Just a thought. Only if they mix with your meds though.

No malaise, but my moods started to improve around the same time as the rash. It's really bizarre. And yes, you're right. Healing can come from many different sources (some not what you expect). There could be a common denominator (i.e. some inflammatory condition). I don't know. I'm not saying my mood is going to stay good (as I have had mood problems long before getting this rash).

Yes, I started taking ginger root internally again fairly recently. I find it acts as a mood stabilizer. It has some serotonergic action (5-ht1a agonist, 5-ht3 antagonism, mild MAOI) inhibition of calcium channels, and of course an anti-inflammatory.

It's almost there. All the redness, itching and burning is gone. The skin is a bit discolored but, it may just be a layer of dead skin. Fingers crossed.

Maybe your mood improved because your skin absorbed substances.

I've been getting small areas of rashes myself underarms and small areas. I think have no idea if true that could be an allergy to anything with elastic in it. I have been using the medical strength cortisone cream. Rx'd by dermatologist a few years ago. Sweat is another suspicion. But with yours on your legs that couldn't apply. Wish there was a way to check inflammation inside the body. Since age is a factor for myself now. I even wondered if a strange version of Covid which is definitely grasping at straws.
