Tumeric and MAOIs

Posted by pontormo on June 24, 2020, at 22:37:25

Does anyone have/know of evidence about whether turmeric (or curcumin) is problematic if you've been prescribed MAOIs?

It seems that turmeric has MAOI--b inhibitory effects. I'm not sure of the strength of the effect.. But I haven't seen any evidence that it can produce any issues. I use it and was thinking of ordering a capsule form,. but I was wondering if I need to be aware of any concerns about doses, etc.

thanks, Pontormo

I wouldn't worry too much.
Many foodstuffs have MAO inhibiting compounds but far from producing a significant inhibiting effect by itself. Yes, some herbs like Rhodiola should be used with caution but their MAOI effects are just a part of there effects which are synergistic with many other compounds to produce the finale.
A few antioxidants are MAOIs, or produce that effect: Resveratrol, Quercetin & active compounds in honey, pollen and propolis (bees)and indeed Cuminoids:

But Turmeric (curcumin) does show significant antidepressant effects. Especially in combination with other medicinal plant extracts. Here's an awesome one: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27723543/

thanks, I may have heard about tumeric as an antidepressant, but had forgotten. I'll keep that in mind.

It hadn't bothered me used with food, but I wondered if, in the doses it was found as a supplement, it might. Guess I'll give it a try.
