Any ideas why SSRIs give me a 1 day boost

Posted by alchemy on June 22, 2020, at 20:22:40

I was reading my logs for my Rx history. It seems like when I start taking either an SSRI or Wellbutrin, I actually feel good the next day or two - and then it is gone.

I've had that experience with some drugs. Very much so with pramipexole and sulpiride, and even a little bit with sertraline.

Maybe it is your anticipation that something good will happen? I find it extremely hard to discern placebo from real. I kind of keep everything up that might help in order to feel secure that I am going to continue to feel good. It's not cheap, but I fare well by doing this. No hospital, no daytime care center, nothing. That is unprecedented since I came down with "mental illness". I just see a psychologist (right now 2 times a week) and a social worker one hour a week. Both paid by insurance.

wellbutrin is mild stimulant, i've taken it and realized the stimulation it had right when i started it, but then it lessed and turned into antidepressant effect, but still with actitation feeling

An SSRI for the first day, they have to build up in your system, for weeks. I dont know what to say about that, maybe it could be anticipation that you started it. Prozac takes 6 weeks to start working at full effect.

Wellbutrin is known to be stimuating, even wehn you first start it, like said its mild stimulant. It hits norephineprhine receptors more than dopamine. My friends noticed a boost when starting wellbutrin

My understanding is that the re-uptake action begins pretty much right away, and that is why you feel something quickly: The transporters ARE being blocked and your synapses ARE being flooded with serotonin.

However, the anti-depression/anxiety effect is believed to come from the eventually DOWN-REGULATION of 5ht receptors from the bombardment of extra serotonin (in a complicated set of steps I can't assume to understand).

I experience the same phenomenon. And it is a very specific serotonergic reaction so I don't believe it's completely placebo.

Perhaps one of the higher level guys on the board can shed more light.
