inadvertent ketamine experience

Posted by beckett2 on May 13, 2020, at 22:17:20

After a dental surgery last year, my depression 'went away', which was odd given the multi decade length of my depression. Well, today my DDS said there was ketamine along with the midazolam.

I have another surgery tomorrow and was dreading it. If anyone has seen Interstellar, I disassociated so fiercely it was like being behind the bookcase.

Perhaps this suggests a good response to ketamine therapy. Now to speak to my psychiatrist and find out if this is available in my area. Maybe I would be able to discontinue my AD eventually.

We'll see how well I respond tomorrow.

What is a DDS? A Dreaded Dental Surgeon?

Cool. Who's your dentist?

Kidding aside, I find that when I use pot, the heavier the dissociation, the better I feel in the oncoming days. I have had times where I feel like my consciousness has completely died, yet my soul is still present. I feel like I have completely disconnected from my body or that my arms and legs have somehow become 'switched'. I also have preceptions that time has stopped (or gone in reverse) or that my brain has imploded into a black hole and then swiftly reversed out the other side into a star.

There is something to be said for 'out of body' experiences. This can be induced by things like psilocybin and/or near death experiences. The latter can produce lasting improvements to mental health.

Before his death, my grandfather was battling a deep depression lasting several years. Treatments were having little effect. He went in for surgery and came out 'in remission'. Although, unfortunately, he died in the ensuing months. I'm not sure what the anesthetic was, but apparently they knew about case reports of some anesthetics' ability to improve depression. This was back in the 90's and I remember my mother telling me at the time that 'sometimes the anesthetics can lift people out of deep depressions'.

I think there is some evidence too that Propofol can have positive effects on depression in some circumstances.

I think that can happen in deep hypnosis too. Specifically, there is a procedure called regression, allowing the subject to go back to an earlier time in life, including previous lives and between-lives. On this topic, I recommend the books by Brian Weiss (MD).

I can't say that I have reverted to a 'previous life', but sometimes with weed, I wake up forgetting what year it is. I seem to (at least temporarily) revert to a time when my life was better. It is interesting that the brain can (seemingly) remember its psychological (and perhaps biochemical) state of previous times.

Of course, when I come to terms with when/where I actually am, I quickly relapse.

Interesting! It went away for how long? I get nasal ketamine at the compounding pharmacy for 2x a week @60mg at $20. I don't have amazing results, but a subtle help in my ability to get things done.Good luck.

______________

That seems like a reasonable price, and I'm glad it helps. Are you able to forgo other medications while taking ketamine? Also, you're able to administer it yourself, or are you supervised in office? Have you noticed any tolerance? (Sorry for all the questions!)

I would say the effect lasted months. At least four where I would find myself thinking, 'hmmm. I'm in a pretty good mod since that surgery.' I kept bringing it up to my shrink, haha and he researched midazolam for some chemical mechanism similar to ketamine.

I really hope treatment is available near me.

This last surgery was Thursday, and the depression has lifted (I have dysthymia and BPll depression). Due to nausea from antibiotics and lack of appetite, I'm not enjoying myself yet.

Another thing. My social anxiety temporarily improves but not for nearly as long.

The experience of ketamine was/is unpleasant, but with foreknowledge, I worked on having an ok trip. The first time, I was frightened.

I received 13 K infusions. Where do you live? It only helped me for a month. Before getting the K treatment I came off Nardil, later finding out I did not need to. The doctor that gave me Ketamine is awesome. She is an expert in Ketamine and psychopharmacology. She is in CT and her name is Lori Calabrese. There is an Assn of Psychiatrists that are Ketamine experts. I would find out who does it in your state.
It is not covered by insurance yet but should be because it is more effective than ECT or TMS For many. It will stop suicidal thinking stat. My opinion based on my experience.

Thank you for the information. Are you still having treatment?

I have an upcoming psychiatrist appointment and I plan to bring it up. I'm hoping Spravato will be adequate over a transfusion because I don't think we can afford transfusions ($1,000 a session).

Fingers crossed because this really was a night and day experience.

I'm glad it helped you, if only for a month. Maybe w enough repetition the effect will last longer?

The Ketamine transfusions were $500 per treatment which seemed reasonable given the nature of the procedure. I guess many people will respond to less treatments than I had but you gradually build the dosage up to a place where you get the most effective outcome. I think I started at .5 mg/ kilogram Body weight. It takes an hour and you have a disassociative reaction. It you achieve that then you chance for success is better. I would have continue treatments if I didnt find Another way to improve my depression using DL phenylalanine. I cured myself without Doctors or prescriptive meds although I still take Nardil and Ritalin but when I added DL all my suicidal thinking evaporated. Do any psychiatrists ever try patients on something so benign and inexpensive?

I don't really know what that is, and I'll look it up. I'm very happy you're feeling better. That's great news.

DL Phenylalanine is an amino acid which is a precursor of dopamine. I have been fighting The Beast for 30 + years and have a wealth of knowledge from personal and professional experience. Who know why it has made the difference?
I only take it 1-2 times a week. The bottle says 2-3 times a day but anytime I start a med I go low and slow. Even on Nardil I was suicidal and that is why I started Ketamine. For all I know the Ketamine helped with the synaptic Connectivity. I dont know but I will NOT stop the DL as once I added it While getting Ketamine, my depression improved. Coincidental?
I Have been treated since 1985 with every med known to man. But the only ones that worked well are MAOs. Did you get the genetic test to determine best chance a med will work based on Your liver enzymes? Worthwhile to do. It shows most SSRIs are ineffective for me. MAOs are the category Suggested for me to use. I have lost Huge chunks of my life trying to Battle this disease. It is not for the faint of heart. Good luck finding answers. I have searched for answers and sometimes found them but not always. But today the choices of different types of treatment is vastly improved.

A: I still take my other medications (which don't help much). I'm a chronic depressive unfortunately, losing hope as I get older.
My Dr was working with a home health clinic. So for my first time I went in and they watched me while I tried the inhalation of compounded ketamine. Then they actually delivered it on a regular basis. Then they stopped sending out ketamine. So my Dr just calls it to a compounding pharmacy. He said he is surprised how many compounding pharmacies have it.
I just go pick up a small bottle that they have filled with 2 weeks worth. It's funny because I asked my doc if I could try it a couple of years ago and he didn't think it was worth it, but he has seen some success.

I was really scared as well. Do you know how many mg? I think I'm on a low dose and I look forward to my two hour light "trip". I put a list of things together to do because I have more motivation. I also feel more connected to people, etc. But then it sadly fades in about 2 hours.

Regarding tolerance. I have different reactions every time I do it. I read that female experiences may vary depending on their current hormone phase. It took me a couple of weeks to start to notice anything. I think the main thing that changed was mornings started to become not as miserably tragic. There are times that I feel like I go through a few hours of extreme sadness the next day, but not always. My hormones and chemicals are extremely sensitive.

Also, my inhalation bottles are like $25 at the compounding pharmacy. The home health clinic found that 60mg 2x a week was a good dose for people. I hope that is an option for you!

Intranasal ketamine is an option.

If your doctor will prescribe it, a compounding pharmacy can prepare a prescription that will cost you $75.00 for three months.

If intranasal ketamine doesn't work, you can always try I.V. Some people respond to I.V. who didn't respond to intranasal.

I'm in the same boat. Started Prozac as a teen (about 30 years ago) and have been through the ringer. Pain is my middle name!

Interesting. Did you try it before Ketamine with success? Do you have anxiety? I'm worried that it will increase it. I have tried other amino acids but didn't like them. Thanks again!

No I started it late in my Ketamine trial but it allowed me to stop those monthly treatments.
