Any benefit to taking a very low dose AP?

Posted by NKP on April 12, 2020, at 11:15:47

I recently began taking 50 mg/day sertraline, together with 0.5 mg/day flupenthixol.

According to most documentation online, the standard dose of flupenthixol for treating depression, is 1 to 3 mg/day.

Am I wasting my time taking so low a dose of flupenthixol? Is there a threshold at which anti-psychotics cease to have any beneficial effect whatsoever?

Half the lowest standard dose isn't that low. It's more than homeopathic and thus it can work to some degree. What are you taking it for?

I hear that low doses are mood improving and high doses work against psychosis. So if you are in it for the mood boost, it might be the perfect dose.

Flupenthixol (FPX) is particularly anti-depressive of the anti-psychotics. Amisulpride and sulpiride likewise. Aripiprazole (APZ) and cariprazine (CPZ) in low doses can also be activating.

Higher dose is not necessarily better, particularly so in the case of APZ and CPZ. The standard dose of FPX for depression as far as I'm aware is 0.5 to 1 mg.

I'm using it for mood boost, mood stabilisation, and hopefully to help with motivation.

I've experienced very strong responses to low doses of Abilify e.g. 0.5mg. I'm currently on 2.5mg. Anything higher turns me into a catatonic zombie.

YMMV as always.
