Rate your psychotropic drugs

Posted by Skeletor on April 10, 2020, at 15:21:11

I welcome you to rate all the psychotropic drugs which you took in the past or are taking in the present. A short explanation of your experience with the drug(s) would be helpful, so that we better understand your rating.

Oh, and please tell us which conditions you treat(ed). Thanks.

Rating Scale is from 0 to 5... "zero" being the worst, "five" being the best.

Sertraline 2 / 5 - subtle effects. Did help with psychosomatic ailments, derealization and cognition, but caused SSRI-typical apathy & indifference. Not sure if it did anything for my social anxiety and psychomotor agitation. At most minor effects. I did take it for two years.

Mirtazapine 2 / 5 - elephant tranquilizer. Didn't like the severe sedation. Didn't sleep well on it, bad dreams. Caused RLS. Was good for appetite, weight gain and IBS. I was on it for two weeks.

Promethazine Syrup / Drops 20mg / ml | 3 / 5 - I rather liked that one. At a lowish dose (15 drops or so) it has a nice calming effect on me, without sedating me too much. Lowers anxiety and agitated states. Brings order into chaos. Good for appetite and stomach. I take it occasionally.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) 2.5 / 5 - Is a good supplement. Heightened focus, less derealization, world seems more colorful. Interesting stuff. Definitely worth a try.

..............................

Conditions treated: Anxiety, depressive states, psychomotor agitation, somatization disorder.

You seem to do good on APs.

That's your current stack. What about older drugs?

Yeah but mostly for psychotic symptoms. Only indirectly for depression, by preventing psychosis and post-psychotic depression!

That is the stack. I may have an adrenal gland issue! Low aldosterone, low sodium, high potasdium. Maybe fixing this will make me better.

What kind of psychotic symptoms do you experience?

Regarding your adrenal gland issue... what symptoms do you think it is causing you? And how do you treat it?

Could you also rate drugs that you've been taking in the past, but not any longer? Thanks :=)

Almost no psychotic symptoms. But before I was on the AP's, I'd always have ideas of reference.
But then again, the psychosis came after starting MAOI. I am not sure what symptoms the adrenal gland produces.
I may have been walking around with this problem for a long time. I am going to the Endocrinologist on tuesday.

Phew past meds... some of them made me really crazy (MAOI) others produced akathisia: Sertraline and Abilify.
So for me personally, they were no good. To a newbie, I wouldn't necessarily recommend to take meds at all unless extremely severe. So rating them is hard, I wouldn't rate them very highly.

I would recommend meds if you knew in advance how you react. But you just don't!

I think you would treat it with low dose fludrocortisone!

0 - paroxetine
0 - risperidone
2 - fluoxetine
3 - reboxetine -- it helped, hence 3, but < 0 if you consider the persistent depersonalisation it left me with
4 - methylphenidate
3 - selegiline, 4 at peak
3 - phenylethylamine, peak 5, < 0 if you consider neurotoxicity
0 - mirtazapine
1 - sertraline
1 - escitalopram
4 - buprenorphine
5 - buprenorphine+methylphenidate
3 - guanfacine
2 - low dose lithium
1 - duloxetine
1 - atomoxetine, peak 2
1 - aripiprazole, at best
0 - quetiapine
2 - flupenthixol, at best
1 - olanzapine, peak 2 or 3, lasting effect 0
3 - sulpiride, peak 5, lasting effect 0
2 - amisulpride, no peak due to sulpiride tolerance
3 - pramipexole, peak 5, lasting effect 0
2 - biperiden, peak maybe 3
0 - clozapine, due to side-effects
2 - cariprazine, at best
3 - trimipramine, maybe 4 -- still evaluating currently
4 - memantine, 5 peak, lower due to dangerous manic state
1 - piracetam
2 - aniracetam
1 - lamotrigine
2 - bisoprolol
3 - codeine, peak 5, lasting effect 0
3 - midazolam, for its intended purpose (insomnia)
2 - zolpidem, see above
1 - temazepam
0 - clonazepam -- catastrophic impulsiveness
1 - oxazepam -- no effect
1 - zopiclone -- no effect
1 - bupropion -- no effect

Even the above is an abbreviation of my experience.

Some of them were difficult to rate on the available scale. I rated some as 1 purely for a lack of adverse effects. Some were rated higher only because they were better than a similar drug rated lower.

Most of these agents were used for depression-related symptoms, chiefly apathy, but some were effective for cognitive impairment. Some of them were for tachycardia or light hypertension. Codeine was for cough but it totally surprised me with a light but pleasant morphine high, which included muscular relaxation and total anxiolysis.

It seems that you respond well to off-label meds

My depression is treatment resistant. Hence, of *course* it doesn't respond to the first-line recommendations of different "guidelines" (mostly some authority's nonsense opinions about trying an SSRI first, and even switch to another SSRI after that fails).

I would if I could avoid sexual dysfunction. I like Opipramol from the sound of it. But I think it doesn't mix well with my meds.
