does diagnosis matter?

Posted by Christ_empowered on February 6, 2020, at 18:42:48

and if so, to whom? to what end?

I have another med check/adjustment coming up, and...yeah. yeah. is it Bipolar I? is it "really" Schizophrenia" oh, wait..meet in the middle, call it Schizoaffective. awesome.

and then...'personality disorders.' who decides who is "severely mentally ill' vs dealing with a 'severe personality disorder' ? does it matter? i mean...the drug-centered treatment that most in the US receive, regardless of social situations, diagnosis, etc...

why the emphasis on diagnosis? is it 'jargon' and 'mystification,' to cover up that the 'helping professions' don't help that much, and that 'standard treatment' is often a dismal failure?

It is about statistics and about funding.

Agencies (International, National, more local) want to know about prevalence and incidence and so on. Partly to do with funding.

Health insurance companies / providers.

People usually want to know 'what is wrong with me?' where that is tied to a likely future...

Also, with a diagnosis, those having it can seek out other people who share it, eg. on forums like this. There are ADD/ADHD, schizophrenia, personality disorder, and other forums.

It doesn't really matter.

The issue is that, because mental health is under the branch of medicine, it seeks to categorize it like it does physical illnesses.

For example, diagnosis like asthma, fractured wrist, diabetes etc. are all clear and objective (i.e. you have the illness or not).

I am either unipolar or bipolar II, but I don't care about the diagnosis, I simply listen to how my body responds to various medications.
