If ER is crushed, will it be IR?

Posted by Lamdage22 on December 18, 2019, at 8:06:39

Hey guys,

we have a shortage of Venlafaxine. I have extended release tablets at home. I prefer the immediate release because i get anorgasmic effects and when i take IR, they lessen after 12 hours. Will crushing and swallowing extended release tablets turn them into more or less immediate release tablets?

Or is my logic flawed?

Refers to extended- and immediate-release (nm)

Hey. I have XR which contains 'spheroids'. I often chew the spheroids (again like you, I notice fewer side effects with IR).

However, a 37.5mg cap contains hundreds of spheroids. It would be a bit challenging to ensure each one gets chewed. You'd most likely end up with a combination of ER and IR.

Another possibility is dissolve a XR capsule in a bottle of water 1-2 days before. Then, drink the water. It will be bitter, but this will be IR.

Well, I got a mortar, so that will be no problem. I will see if it works or not. It's just a bit scary that essential psych meds are sold out... I mean it's not like its an unusual medication. I think I will stock up the next time I see my doctor!

And a spheroid is a tiny sphere? Like a small seed?

Interesting that you find immediate-release to have fewer side effects, I would have expected the reverse.

It doesnt have fewer side effects, but with immediate release i can sleep it off and its gone the next day. Extended release stays in the blood all day long!

Yeah, the tiny balls are I guess called "spheroids".

The IR seems to give my system a break from serotonin (so that I'm not bombarded all day long). I end up having fewer sexual symptoms (although there is a bit of an afternoon mood lull.

That's exactly why I prefer immediate release. I just wanted to avoid the topic.

I take it Wellbutrin (bupropion) didn't work for you. I'm at another crossroads. I keep stopping SSRIs / SNRIs because I feel like my mind is being controlled (not in a psychotic way, but just in that it eliminates any depth to my feeling).

I wanted to ask my doctor about bupropion (never taken it). However, I'm in Canada and I don't have a doctor (on a waiting list).

Did it have any positive impact on your mood (if that's what you were taking it for)?

Absolutely. However, it led to insomnia which led to psychosis. So I stopped.

Right. I think you had mentioned that.

Effexor helps, but I just can't take much or I get numb. I'd like to try Wellbutrin, perhaps 'microdosing' to start. I'm very thin though. I'm not sure they'd prescribe.

A friend seems quite a bit better after switching from Effexor to Zyban (Wellbutrin).

Clearer mentally.

I like the idea of low dosing these two! Sometimes less is more.

If you crush extended release formulations, you will obtain a immediate release of active principle.

Could it be that the crushed extended-release tablets are released quicker than regular immediate-release tablets? I am having some trouble to fall asleep. It might be the stimulation from Venlafaxine. I take it at night.

It is possible. I guess it depends on how finely pulverised they are.

If it is more stimulating than sedating, why do you take it at night?

I take it at night because it is a low dose and that way I am not anorgasmic during the day.
