Low dose abilify tolerance?

Posted by rovers95 on September 23, 2019, at 5:53:49

Hi guys

I'm about a month in to using abilify at a mighty dose of 2mg every other day for bipolar 2 depression.

It has been great although made me hypomanic AF. However I feel it is now wearing off in terms of that and motivation OR increasing lamotrigine up from 125 to 200mg over the same month has protected against mania?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

????

I wish I could provide a solid, real answer. my best guess is that the low dose approach might have resulted in an initial mood lift that simmered, over time, as your brain adjusted to the ongoing presence of abilify.

bumping the lamictal probably had/has a strong effect here, too. I didn't realize how powerful lamictal was until my dose was adjusted here and there, and...wow. 200 is my limit, because above that it dampens my mood (but not as badly as trileptal did).

on the plus side...a former psych told me that 200mgs lamictal is his usual minimum for bipolar depression, so maybe the new dosage will be better, over the long haul?

Lamictal can be activating and is not best suited to treat mania as it can actually trigger it.

You're on a very low dose of Abilify and it has beem shown to cause mania at lower doses. It works to treat mania at higher doses, 5 mg and above.

Lamictal and Abilify is going to be a very activating combination at lower doses.
