I have a MTHFR varient gene. Deplin? Help Please

Posted by PCB on September 1, 2019, at 20:28:38

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for all your help this month. I actually have an appointment with a new psychiatrist Tuesday discuss alternatives to Nardil.

So I ended up doing 23andme's, "Health and Ancestry test," a few weeks ago without any surprise results. Found several websites that explained by searching your 23andme raw data results for the C677T and A1298C gene, your could determine if you have the faulty Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase genes. Turns out I have a positive test. I think this has to be confirmed by laboratory testing.

Now all the internet reading so far has said there is not enough studies to know if this positive test does make you more resistant to medication and if Deplin works. But image if I have been treatment resistant for 24 years due to this gene.

Does anyone know much about this gene test? Experience with Deplin?

Thanks!

One thing I wanted to mention about Selling (folate/folic acid/etc) is that do not take it with Lamictal. It was recently shown to nullify the benefits of lamictal.

That said, I didn't get much out of a trial of it way back when it came out in 2008/2009. I -was- taking Lamictal at the time, but it wasn't until a year ago that it was discovered folate messes w Lamictal.

Good luck!

Hey PeterMartin,

Thank you for your great post. Do you know if you have the abnormal MTHFR gene?

PCB

PS I take Lamictal too. If it is okay, I am going to start separate link about Lamictal and Folic Acid.

I like your new post!

I have never had a genetic test done, sorry.

I have noticed that the I have odd responses to a lot of the vitamins often suggested for depression like B and D. D (as a supplement) definitely makes me down. Probiotics (even in yogurt), seem to depress me too. Not sure if that's Lamictal or me just being odd.

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for the responses. I was wondering if Linkage or SLS might know about the MTHFR test and Deplin? Thanks in advance. Psychobabble is the best.

I had the Genomind genetics test a few years ago, and it did reveal that I have the MTHFR mutation and I was prescribed Deplin by a very prominent psychiatrist. It didn't do squat after taking it for at least double the amount of time it should take to begin to see some results.
I think there was allot of overhype on the part of the MTHFR mutation.

I took Deplin also with little effect. I try everything g(almost) and everything if it might be me a response. I am no longer her searching for answers as I think I finally have a handle on my depression 30 years of research and a life lost, sad to say. I dont care about much anymore because I tried so hard to get my life together from 1987-2010 with little sustained. it cost me my job and my marriage. I was often close to the end but was able to persevere through incredible odds.
The doctors were not able to offer me much hope. I now believe in MAOs and Ketamine as a backup if things get bad again. I take DL Phenylalanine which I have figured ou has been a huge component of my recent stability. Go figure. Docs know nothing g about it. I found out about it here years ago on this site and revisited it recently anf its wffects have been miraculous at reducing suicidal thoughts for me.

I'm glad that you have been relieved of suicidal thoughts. They are excruciating. How long did it take for phenelalynine to work?

Thanks.

Hi PCB,
1)I also discovered via 23andme and analysis of my raw data that I have an MTHFR variant (I don't have access right now to which variant it was, but I can track it down another time if you would like to know).
2)I tried Deplin and found that it worsened my depression, particularly in terms of despair/suicidal thoughts.
3)I plan to retry Deplin if I ever come off Nardil, but that isn't on the horizon as Nardil is the only drug/substance that has ever been a substantial help to me other than DHEA, which worked wonders before it pooped out after a year.
4)Sorry if this is old-hat, but did/do you supplement with B6 while on Nardil? I certainly appreciate the difference when I am lax about supplementation, but I have other issues w/food that (I hope, at least) make that more necessary for me than most.

Best wishes.

Background: 35+ years of MDD and GAD; currently on Nardil (90 mg).
