Anyone taken low ((75mg) doses of bupropion?

Posted by linkadge on August 26, 2019, at 15:57:01

Has anybody taken lower doses of Wellbutrin (bupropion)? What I mean, is splitting tablets for doses under, say 100mg.

What effect does it have (or doesn't have) in lower doses.

Thanks for your response...

Did you have problems with higher doses?

Yeah. Insomnia and later psychosis because of the insomnia.

OK thanks,

I'm currently taking Effexor 37.5mg, and was contemplating a switch to a low dose of bupropion. I've never taken this med before. If I do, I would probably divide the tablet, or dissolve in water and sip.

Thanks, I was thinking about either dissolving it in water overnight (and then sipping smaller doses) or simply sucking on it.

The problem with me, is that (perhaps even at 75mg) I will get every side effect and then likely have to quit.

I literally taper my Effexor XR sphere by sphere.

Of course you can divide extended release tablets. It just wont be extended release anymore.

I do. It's not so much tapering off the med. It's tapering on the med.

I can literally feel as few as 10 spheroids (where there's about 117 inside a 37.5mg capsule).

I took Wellbutrin XL for 2 years, at 300mg. It was 2004-5. WHen i first started it, i was in high school and i was always tired and sleepy like everyoe else.....but then when i got up to 300mg i started noticing i was a little more awake and focused on doing the assignements. It defiently is not like adderall, but it's mild dopamine reptake inhibition helped. It's kinda like cup of coffee antidepressant, it wakes you up somewhat and you can be bit more alert. But the other side ... i rerember i could not take naps on wellbutrin, i would lay down but i could fall asleep, i would have to just lay there. And also later on it caused anxiety, due to it's norepinephrine rep-take inhibition. It's stronger on NE than dopamine. That's wh its activating, but also NE can give you the jitters or ittibility. The deliver system the XL did was it would release 100mg in morning, then another 100mg in after noon, then one more in later after noon. Bupriopion usually lasts 4-5 hours, that why you have to redose on non-extended release forms.

I went up to 450mg, i did notice difference, enhanced concentration, but also anxiety. People respond differently, there's posters here that said wellbutrin at 450 was a miracle for their low energy depression. It was more anxiety for me, but still enhanced concentration. It makes thinigs more interesting, like you google more things in research

just know that bupropion is known for causing anxiety with anyone with anxiety disorders, maybe yeah stay with 75 or 100mg on extended release, larger doses are more activating but they also bumb ur noeepinephrine levels up = activation but also anxiety

Why dont you want to take both? Is Venlafaxine bothering you with side effects?

Thanks for your response RJ. It's funny that I have taken all the SSRIs, several TCAs, an MAOI but not bupropion.

Effexor is just leaving me wanting to sleep all day. Nortriptyline helped (and I may go back) but perhaps Wellbutrin is easier to tolerate - who knows.

I am using a bunch of herbs and supplements to try and get an energy boost, but it's not that easy to regulate that way.

I would be willing to try the two together. My last doctor retired and so I am currently connecting with a new one.

The problem is that I am currently taking 3 meds (Effexor, mirtazapine, lithium) and adding a 4th might not go over well (regular doctor, not psychiatrist).

Oh i see. I have to admit that i take 5 psychopharmaceuticals and yet i preach not focusing solely on meds. Not very successful but thats another story.

I take low dose: Lithium, Venlafaxine and Trazodone. High dose Seroquel and Zyprexa. Lithium is more of a supplement really. I take 225.

Good to hear. I'm in a challenging time career wise (probably a lost job) and it threw everything off for me. The Effexor is too low to help anything more than anxiety. I could raise it, but am not keen on the serotonergic side effects. I also don't think it will do much for energy.

I've been having really bad lows during the day 10am to 3pm or so. My mood picks up after that. I can barely move. I've been self medicating (with some success) with caffeine and nicotine. I'd like to try a low dose of bupropion to help with this, but I still need to wait to connect with my new doctor.

The cool thing about Wellbutrin is that it works almost instantly. At least it did for me.

Yeah, I have to wait to connect with this new doctor and see if they're willing. They don't know my history, so they will first want to ramp up current meds to insane levels.
