Does Your Doc Allow Any Alchohol With Your Meds?

Posted by Phillipa on October 19, 2010, at 10:13:34

Just wondering if your docs allow any alchohol with your psych meds. Some say l-2 drinks is fine. I wonder if most others say none at all. Thanks as previous discussion here lead to this thread. Phillipa

My doctor is not particularly interested in my (relatively average) alcohol consumption. I only take SSRIs though.

Phillipa,

My current psychiatrist hasn't asked about my alcohol consumption, but then again, I've only seen him once. The last psychiatrist I saw before this one never asked me about my alcohol consumption, and I saw her for several months. The first psychiatrist I saw used to ask me about my alcohol consumption at every appointment, but he didn't mind if I drank moderately.

First pdoc I had said 1-2 drinks was OK, not more than once month.

Later a different pdoc said no alchohol at all, "not even a drop"

My p-doc knows I like to drink wine and has said a couple a glasses of white wine is fine with parnate. Red wine is not, but I never drink red anyway. Beer can be problematic, but I don't like beer. So I have a couple of glasses of white 4-5 times per week. Doesn't bother me or interfere with the meds.

No alcohol allowed for on meds. Not only is it bad to combine the two, but alcohol is a depressant. I never really liked the taste of alcohol so I don't mind.

Phillipa, I used to drink/binge lots during weekend, and dry out during the week. Eventually did a sober trial for 4 weeks and noticed that my meds worked so much better, and a gigantic difference in my overall mood. Panic and anxiety gone.

My doc said that a couple of beers every now and then would be okay, but I'm not interested anymore... I discovered that even tiny quantities of alcohol affect my mental health (terrible depressant and anxiety trigger). So I quit drinking alcohol altogether 2 years ago, it was painless and so worth it.

Wow, that is awesome to hear! Very inspiring. I also find that alcohol makes me much more depressed.

Maxie not in 15 years only because at the time the doc gave me chloral hydrate and can't take with alchohol. Prior to adding that which I no longer take and haven't in many many years. Prior to that all my pdocs knew I drank 4-5 beers or white wine nightly and they said it was fine. I felt great then that was when had aerobics dance business, three kids all young, ran 5 miles a day and also was attending school so definitely no depression. I never binge drank. Hated getting drunk. This was what I knew I would feel great the next day on. Was only taking benzos then. Never should have stopped as would not be on this board now. Phillipa

To me, 4-5 beers is a lot. I get a buzz after 1 beer. It sounds like you were very active when you were younger.

Wow, sounds great! What were you doing before nursing? What made you decide to become a nurse? Were you always a psych nurse?
