I'M BACK..and doing well on EMSAM!

Posted by Crazy Horse on July 13, 2006, at 8:16:58

Hey all. Back after being blocked for a week (bad boy..spank, spank!) for joking around with my good friend Marty..guess i need to keep it SERIOUS here???? Don't quite get that...Hmmmm..isn't laughter good for the soul? Anyway, moving on....
I am doing very well on 6 mgs of EMSAM, and up to 3mgs of Klonopin daily as needed. I really, really like EMSAM. For me it's a very clean drug..no side effects at all. The antidepressant effect is "Just Right." Not a stimulating high like Parnate was for me, just a nice over-all all feeling of wellness. I can enjoy life, i'm social, right now i can truly say i am very content..just hope and pray it lasts. BTW, i've been on EMSAM for 5 weeks now.
Blessings and well wishes to all!

You might want to ask for some clarification on the Administration board or perhaps email Dr. Bob. I am positive that your intent was understood. It is my feeling that the content of your jokes could have acted as triggers for some people who might be emotionally too close to the situations you depicted.

> Hmmmm..isn't laughter good for the soul?

Yes, however, revisiting traumas are not. I think this is what the moderator might have been trying to protect certain people from. Again, I think it would be a good idea to correspond directly with Dr. Bob. He is very gracious to interact with members of the community in situations like this.

This is good news. I hope things continue to improve for you.

Be well.

I know and understand Scott. I need to save my "humor" for personal emails between friends like Marty. I need to be more aware of how what i say may offend or hurt others...i don't have a problem w/that.

Great to hear that emsam is working for you, Monte--

I've been doing really well with it, too. My only problem is sleep-- which I'm working on-- but it's not anything that would cause me to stop. I'm hoping I'll pick up some tactics for dealing with that better.

How many mgs. are you on? This is my only (small problem) too. I fall asleep easy enough, but always wake up too early..4 or 5 a.m. So i only average about 5 hours of sleep a night. I would prefer 7-8. Glad you are doing well too.

I was having the early awakening problem on 6 mg of Emsam. I added 25 mg of diphenhydramine (generic Benadryl) at bedtime and it did the trick. (Note that I also take 75 mg of Nortriptyline, which has a sedative effect, at night so YMMV.)

I would still like to try EMSAM. But certain people have said it would be too stimulating for me. What would happen if I were to just use a small portion of the patch and remove it at night? Would this help with sleep? As I already take valium. Is klonopin better for some reason as it seems everyone if augmenting with klonopin Thanks Phillipa

Monte, Jost - I am doing pretty good on half a 6mg and taking off before bed - but still only get 5, maybe 6hrs. of sleep. Would also like more. Happy you are both doing good on this stuff. Richard

I went up to 9 mg and then 12 mg for about 12 hours-- taking it off a few hours before bed.

That wasn't quite enough emsam, so my pdoc thought 18 mg/12h -- two 9mg/12h or 12mg +6 mg/12h---making sure to take it off, of course--would be safe.

So that's what I'm doing. Yesterday was my first day.

I also happened to take a 100 mg capsule of neurontin last night for the first time for shoulder pain. I slept a lot better.

Defintely taking it off at night helped-- but I needed more time off, which is why I switched to the 18mg/12hr. I'd guess the neurontin might have played a role in my sleeping better, too, though.

Only a guess, because of both at the same time--but I slept better than times when I tried 12mg/12h -(- that dosage wasn't enough).

I was getting 6 1/2 or 7 hours--but I need at least 8 hrs.. So you might be able to work with keeping it on longer than 12 hours.

I did ask about this on the administration board as I was upset about it. I guess it can be looked up. Dr. Bob said it may have been offensive to Canadians....

Donna,

I'm confused, you were upset by my post that caused me to be blocked? Or you were upset about the fact that i was being blocked? If the first is true..i'm sorry if i offended you or anyone else in any way(this is the last thing i would ever want to do). I wasn't being (or trying to be) offensive to Canadians...i was just poking fun at my good friend Marty who is French Canadian, we always joke with eachother..try to make eachother laugh, and it works! Marty and i have similar sense of humors-one reason we have become good friends. I won't be doing it on PB again however. Have a nice day.

Sorry for being unclear about that, Monte. You could tell in my admin. post about it that I was upset that you two were blocked. I had said in some other post where you guys were having at it that I thought you were hysterical and I appreciated the humor alot. No, I was pretty upset about the block. Still am actually. Thanks Donna :) We will continue with our humor. When you mix Monte with Marty the chemistry just equals humor..at least it's humor in our eyes. We will try to be careful to not offend ANYONE however..as we do respect the PB rules...most of the time! :)

I have been off the board for a while. Currently on 10 mg lexapro and 1 mg klonopin. I've been reading a lot about EMSAM. What is it?

Emsam is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) similar to Parnate and Nardil that is delivered into the blood stream via a transdermal patch through the skin.

Glad to hear it. I'm afraid I don't have the energy to read the entire thread so I wonder if you could quickly answer a couple of questions for me:

What, if you don't mind me asking, is your dx?

Why EMSAM specifically? Are you resistant to other agents?

I ask because EMSAM is one of the very few options left open to me. I'm particularly curious, anyone, to see if it has potential for Bipolar depression. I am completely out of the loop.

Cheers,

Jah.

DX is: Major treatment resistent depression with some atypical features, GAD, OCD, Social anxiety disorder, and used to have panic attacks.
Why EMSAM? I ran out of options..tryed em all, including ECT treatments in '97. All the ssri's, all the snri's, and most of the TCA's, along with tons of augmentation agents..lithium thyroid, Lamictal, neurontin..the list goes on and on. Also have tryed 4 benzo's , currently on 3 mgs of Klonopin daily. Parnate worked very well for me for awhile but the insomnia and afternoon fatigue got unbearable!! So, we (Pdoc and I) thought maybe EMSAM would be a good one for me..so far so good, i recently went up to 9 mgs. It certainly hasn't been a cure all, but it's definitely helping the depression and social anxiety. So their you have it. I wish you well.
