Klonopin and my muscles

Posted by Glydin on November 14, 2005, at 7:14:23

Klonopin is not noted for "great" muscle relaxant properties... BUT - it seems to work well in that regard for me. I have osteoarthritis which has led to some compensitory muscle issues. Plus, my anxiety brings on muscle tension problems. What I have noted while off Klonopin is an increase in this discomfort level with muscle soreness and achiness. SOOOO, I decided to restart a low dose of K to "see" if that helped. It has. I have done the usually prescribed muscle relaxants and I do use something occ. for pain (OTC). The muscle relaxants do not seems to do as well a job - without the baggage - as K does for me. Anxiety issues are well controlled without the use of K - the tension stuff withstanding which is a multicause problem. If K continues to help with this - which impacts my overall functioning - well, I'm back on the K trail for a while for that reason.

This is all fine and dandy with my docs, so me and my "friend" are a team again.

Glydin,

Im sorry abuot you muscle issues, Klonopin can make me lethargic, which maybe can make muscles ache more, i dont have arthritus, but would Valuim help, it has muscle relaxant properties. I am just giving some mellow advice, im not really knowalaged in that area.

Well talk to your pdoc about Soma, a muscle relaxant, which it is metabolized into Miltown (meprobamate) which is an antianxiety muscle relaxant. I dont know if you have heard of it. It could help. Im just giving some advice that i think could help. But go by what work best.

Matt

Thanks Matt.... This plan is working pretty well so far but if I find I need a change, I will ask about it. I know of Soma but have not tried it. Robaxin was a nightmare - literally gave me night terrors.... ewwwww. Flexaril is a snoozefest and it's alot like a TCA, which isn't a bad thing for the most part. Skelaxin is good but it gives me a headache... at least it takes you mind off of achiness. (smile)

Take good care of you and thanks again.

Hi Phillipa,

It is a difficult thing to treat for a number of reasons. Muscles have “memory” and are very reactionary. So, if there is something that causes tensing – in my cause arthritis and anxiety – it’s difficult to override that.

Treating anxiety issues helps for me, but when it’s really a nasty problem, treating the pain with OTC products like Advil, Tylenol, etc. (as long as there’s no contraindication) helps. Of the muscle relaxants I’ve tried, I like Skelaxin the best. It doesn’t make me drowsy and while it can give me a headache at times, I find if I hydrate enough the H/A is lessen or will go away.

It’s a pesky problem and a lot of folks struggle with it.
