MAOI is making me more anxious, SLS, Ed e.c.t

Posted by Tom Twilight on July 18, 2005, at 15:49:07

I need the biggest brains in babble land to solve this problem

I’ve been taking Marplan/Isocarboxazid for almost to weeks.

My Pdoc prescribed it for anxiety and social anxiety
Its supposed to work well for these problems being a Hydrazine MAOI and therefore similar to Nardil at least in theory.

At 10mgs it didn’t really have much effect on my anxiety, at 20mgs it made it much worse.
What on earth is wrong with me?
Why am I responding this way?

My Pdoc says he has never encountered this reaction before and I’m worried he’ll think I’m making it up.
I don’t really know what to do, I’ve heard of Parnate causing anxiety but never Marplan or Nardil.

What should I do?

Hey i know this probably has nothing to do with an maoi BUT valium/diazpiam supposed to be one of the best benzo's for anxiety BUT when i take it it makes me very anxious...

some it does some it dont, maybe you are the one in what ever thousand it does? just cus your doc havent seen this before doesnt mean it hasnt happened before..

also with most things things get worse before getting better?

maybe you could hang in there abit longer with it?

what kind of anxiety are you getting with it? what goes through your mind?

Hi Tom,

I've heard of Nardil causing anxiety. I think it's probably similar to SSRIs where it gets worse before it gets better.

Have you reduced the dose to 10mg? How are you feeling?

Hey Ed and CrazyChick

I have reduced the dose to 10mgs and I’m feeling a lot better.

Thanks for the information about Nardil causing start up anxiety, I didn't realize it could do that, and I thought I new a fair bit about pharmacology, DO'H.

CrazyChick, your absolutely right, people can have rare paradoxical reactions to drugs
I even heard that Amphetamines make some people sleepy

What’s disheartening is that my doctor has never heard of Marplan causing anxiety, and probably thinks I’m making it up.

Thanks for all your support during this difficult time,
You’re been great Ed!

I was anxious on clomipramine and it didn't get better. Same with effexor. It increased my anxiety from day one to day end. Some AD's can do this.

Tom

I dunno if this is relevant, but can you distinguish agitation from anxiety?

I had a reaction to Parnate 10mg + SAMe 400mg which was agitation, and benzos helped a little but not a lot. Irritation, fear (I guess) and anger. I wondered if it was seratonin related. Anyway, if I were you I would be more pessimistic about agitation than about anxiety.

Actually I have no idea what one can expect from an AD, except of course that it doesn't make life any worse.

Sounds to me like it might have been dopamine related. SAMe and Parnate are both very strong dopaminergics.

Is that right, Link. I had always been of the opinion that SAMe was more involved with seratonin, and that there were questions over how dopaminergic it was. Perhaps I overgeneralised from a study where, I think, they injected SAMe into the brains of rats and they went Parkinsonian, or something like that. That was disputed anyway.
Most of my info comes from the Life Extension magazine.

Stixck with it. All MAOI's have a potential to cause an INITIAL paradoxical anxiety. Nardil at first made me anxious, now it has the opposite effect. Use a benzo in the first weeks of therapy to nullify the anxiety.

Hi Tom.

> At 10mgs it didn’t really have much effect on my anxiety, at 20mgs it made it much worse.

I wish I could offer you a report of personal experience with Marplan, but I only took it for two weeks. I experienced no anxiety, though.

> What on earth is wrong with me?

Nothing You have a human brain. It is more complex than any other system known to man.

> Why am I responding this way?

I favor the explanations already offered that it is probably a startup side effect that will hopefully disappear within the first two weeks.

I know how scary it is to have an atypical reaction to a drug that your doctor has never seen before nor has a clue as to why you are having it. If your system was more typical, you probably wouldn't be here looking for alternate treatments. You'll find one that works eventually. Hang in there!
