Xanax boosts the effect of Lexapro?

Posted by chess on March 15, 2005, at 19:44:49

I know the SSRIs can boost the effect of benzos, but can it work the other way around? I've been taking Lexapro with limited success so far, but when i take Xanax with it i feel better, but i'm not sure if it's the Xanax alone or if the Xanax is boosting the effect of the Lexapro? I'd like to figure it out because if the Xanax is boosting the effect of Lexapro then i'd rather take more Lexapro to feel better rather than keep taking Xanax. Anyone have any experience or info?

Maybe the xanax is reducing your aniety [if you suffer from it] and that is why you feel better? Fondly, Phillipa

You are asking agreat question. I don't know the answer, but here are my 2 cents.

If you increase the Lexapro, you might get sexual side effects and tiredness.

The problem with benzos is that one often must eventually raise the dose. But that happens with SSRI's as well.

I would strongly recommend that for now, you leave well enough alone.

It's probably just that you are using the right combination, so why not stay with it.

I have read that Xanex can give some people a slight euphoric feeling, so maybe the added Xanex is benefitting the Lexapro in that way.

I was on both and never felt great on either but we are all sooo different.

Chess,
What are you taking it for? We are on the same combo, I also take xanax but only on an as needed basis. It really helps I think. I am scared to take the xanax on a regular basis because of all the stories you hear about withdrawal. I would like to hear if anyone has taken the same dose of xanax for an extended (years) period of time without becoming addicted.

Hi Steve.

What do you mean by "addicted"?

Steve
i'm taking Lexapro but not sure if it's helping or not
when i take xanax-xr i feel calm and normal, no general anxiety and no weakness feeling, just like my old self, problem is is that i don't take it as often as my psych wants me to and at the dosage she wants me to because i'm afraid of getting addicted to it
when i take less or none of the xanax-xr i definitely feel worse, but i'm not sure whether that's due to withdrawal from it or because my problem is with my gaba system and xanax just works for me at a particular dosage

Scott,
Perhaps that was a poor choice of words. I guess what I mean is without going through withdrawal.
Or using it at the same dosage and not having to up it to get the same effect.
