What medications work for borderline PD?

Posted by smokeymadison on November 20, 2004, at 22:33:26

I was recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and am on 15 mg of Abilify daily. I am still very depressed and am very agitated. I can't sit still to save my life and am having a very hard time keeping from cutting my arms to calm myself down. A doctor in the emergency room wrote me a prescription for Xanax last night and i have been taking 1 mg every 4 hours. the Xanax makes me very tired physically but mentally my mind is just as red as it ever was. What meds help with agitation? I have been on Trileptal in the past and didn't have this, would that help if i went back on it? What ohers meds might help agitated depression? i can't take SSRIs b/c i get manic on them. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know someone with BPD who is doing very well on Zyprexa. Some people find Abilify to be very agitating and anxiogenic. If you are more agitated now than before you began taking the Abilify, I think you've found the culprit. Zyprexa is also an excellent anti-manic agent.

Do you have depression along with the BPD?

Right now i am very depressed as well as agitated. before this (a few days ago) i was cycling every 4/5 hours up and down in my mood. it seems to have collapsed into depressed agitation. i have never tried Zyprexa. i have tried Risperdal and found it way too tiring. Is Zyprexa as sedating as Risperdal?

Hey SmokeyM.
Doc's suggest that moodstabilizers are best for BPD dx.

trileptal was great for me, i can't seem to take SSRI's either. Trileptal- i'm ready to get back on it. was there a reason you stopped? Side-effects..etc?

-zyprexa also worked well for me. am on risperdal right now and sleep (lack of) is BIggest issue and i remember being more tired on zyprexa than on risperdal. however, everybody reacts differently. agree with SLS that you found your culprit for aggitation, but it may just be a dosage change needed. i started on .5 risp. and Craved alcohol and cig's BAD, mind i swear was worse (or at least not helping any) but upped to 1.0, mind still raced but didn't have physical symptoms along with.
