ECT

Posted by EERRIICC on October 10, 2004, at 3:13:06

I'm going to start a course of ECT on Oct.20, they are going to start with high dose unilateral, and switch to bilateral if this dose not work. I'm scared, but more frightened of depression. If it does work I'll receive all the maintance ECT I want for life. This is being done at the CAMH in Toronto so it should be of high quality. If anyone is interested I can post results.

Hi,

Please let me know your results. Also, what makes you think it will be of high quality just because it's being done in that particular place. In what way will it be of high quality?

Denise, treatment results vary by doctor and hospital. You want your Edoc to be up to date and care about details...such as making sure youre kept well oxygenated throughout the whole thing. One word of advice...avoid foreign trained "English as a second language" psychiatrists who perform ECT. They tend to be less respectful of the American ideal of individual rights.

Additionally an Edoc at a teaching hospital ECT unit is going to be up on the latest stuff compared to a private practice psychiatrist who just does ECT on the side. There are definitely differences in doctors.

Hi,

Thanks for this I was just wondering if some places use better equipment and have people who are more skilled in using the device.

Well if I do ever decide to go for it or am even given the choice of having it then I'll make sure I do my research thoroughly before-hand.

Seems to me though from looking at the experience of others it either works or it doestn't, regardless of where they have it, what type of treatment they have unilateral or bilateral or who actually performs it. It's very hit and miss, like ADs I guess just more drastic.

Do you know if they are doing more research on how affective bifrontal ect is and how it compares to unilateral and bilateral with regards to side effects?

Denise
