Is dopamine envolved with Alcohol?

Posted by 1980Monroe on July 21, 2004, at 15:57:35

I'm saying if that's what makes drinking "rewarding", and causes addiction. I know it works with GABA, but what about all the other neurotransmitters?

Is this why people abuse alcohol?

I dont belive benzo's such as Xanax deal with dopamine, but im not *sure*, but still people abuse it anyways, same to barbiturates.

Can somebody anwnser this?

I believe it increases serotonin AND dopamine. BarbaraCat, Chemist, or Sadpanda might know this, they 're pretty good with the chemistry stuff. If I remember (bad at remembering things here!) I'll ask my brother's friend as he iis in grad school for neurosciences with an emphasis on addiction and recovery.

I found the following in one of the messages here. Tianeptine is a seratonin reuptake accelerator which means it sponges up your excess seratonin. I think somehow that ends up making the dopamine more active... lots of weird things like that seem to happen with these meds.

quote:

"If you need alcohol in a pill, neither valium nor xanax is the answer as far as I am concerned. Take 25 mg of Stablon (Tianeptine) and feel the way alcohol makes you feel. It is a French antidepressant, but is widely being misused for it's euphoriant effects. 12.5mg will not make that much difference, but if you double the dose, soon you will reach into an intoxicated state. Stablon is safe, it has mood elevating properties, and unlike benzodiazepines, no dependence is reported so far. It will not ruin your health or your family, but may improve your life."
