GEODON weight loss / gain?

Posted by jtevers on July 16, 2004, at 20:32:22

i had hospitalized in 2000 and diagnosed bipolar. i had been administered neurontin (mood stabilizer) and seroquel (antipsychotic) that i have taken to this day.

problem is...i sleep too much and have gained nearly 80 lbs. during treatment.

i have heard that switching antipsychotics (from seroquel, with a moderate propensity to cause weight gain, to geodon, with a more neutral effect) may help and i hope that geodon instead will allow me to lose some weight.

any insight anyone?

it would be much appreciated.

thank you

jt

You might want to mix low abilify with med geodon. I've tried abilify but not geodon. The geodon will supposidly make you sleepy and the abilify will wake you up. You would have to take both in the day. Nither of the 2 are asociated with weight gain. Since seroquel has a short half life I asume you take it durring the day, probably 2x. The geodon is the same, abilify has a very long half life and you could even take it a few as every other day, but better not to. My guess also is that the day time dose of seroquel is making you hungry shortly after you take it? You could try a AP that you take befor bed and would be less likely to make you hungry. But yes it still can. I take zyprexa and wellbutrin to wake me up and make less hungry. Its a cheeper alternative, especialy since generic wellbutrin sr.
