NARDIL is soooo awesome!!!!!!!

Posted by Jasmine on January 26, 2004, at 17:52:08

What can I say....I feel great!! :) After being on 45mg of Nardil for 5 weeks, and not feeling a thing at all, I was able to talk my doctor to letting me go up to 60mg. I'm going on 2 weeks at this new dose and already noticing a change in myself. I haven't felt this good for as long as I can remember. And since they say you don't get the full effect for at least 4 weeks on a particular dose, I can't wait for it to only get better :) Hopefully.

I'm taking it for extreme social anxiety, and although there's not much improvement with some things such as making eye-contact with people and initiating conversation with strangers, I've noticed that I've been much more relaxed around groups of people and when people initiate conversation with me, I find myself actually enjoying talking to them, instead of being deathly afraid that they're thinking I'm stupid or not worth talking to.

I'm a university student and I've had a huge problem just getting myself into a classroom full of my peers. I always found myself failing classes over the years simply because I couldn't bring myself to go to class. Now, since this new semester has started, I haven't missed a single class. Yeah me!!! :) And the most amazing thing is that today I actually raised my hand to ask the professor a question. I don't think I've done that since kindergarten. I prefer to remain invisible, but not anymore. While doing a group assignment today, I actually added my input to the discussion instead of sitting there just nodding my head like an idiot agreeing with everyone. I'm actually having enough confidence to share my own ideas. I'm seriously amazed.

Now, I know I've been rambling on and on, and thank you if you're still reading :) :) but this happiness thing is so new to me and I just couldn't wait to share. I finally found a med that works for me! I've been reading everyone's posts about Nardil for a few months now, and never believed the good stuff until now.

I just have on tiny problem that's kind of bugging me. IT TAKES ME FOREVER TO PEE!!!! hahaha! I seriously have to sit there for like 5 or more minutes before anything happens and sometimes I have to get up and walk around or drink lots and lots of water before I can go. I pretty much have to wait until I feel like I'm gonna wet my pants before I can actually urinate. Sorry if this is graphic, and I know talking about bodily functions isn't a nice topic, but it's really starting to bother me. At first it kind of scared the crap outta me. It's been a week since this started happening. I've heard of Bethanechol to help out, but I'm afraid it will make me nauseous like it does a lot of people. Does anyone know of anything else I could take??? Or maybe this will go away. I would love that.

I haven't heard of anyone else who really has this side effect, but someone out there must know something. Please....I'll take any advice I can get.

Ok, I'm done blabbing now, but just really couldn't wait to share my great news with everyone. I hope things are going just as well for everybody else as well. Take care!

Does that make you the Nardel Queen and Ace the Nardel King? No, Jasmine in Aladdin was a princess. You are the Nardil Princess!

Jasmine, I'm not a phyisician and maybe what I'm sayng is a complete bulls**t but the problem with the pee seems like urinary ritention. I don't if it's listed as side effect but you may want to talk about it with your doctor. I'm glad you're doing fine, I'm on a MAOI too, best wishes !

Jasmine,
I too just went up to 60mg. I'm so glad you are finding relief. I was doing well at 45, but under extra stress (school-related) felt like it wasn't enough. We'll see how 60mg goes, with the SE's and all. So far on day 2 at 60 I've only had a bit of jitteriness (caffeine certainly didn't help that!) and some mild orthostatic hypotension.

However, I, too have urinary retention at times. It is listed as a side effect of Nardil. For me, I just have to bear down and sometimes blow like I am giving birth (again, sorry for being graphic) and it usually gets stuff going eventually, although I have to continue to bear down to keep it flowing. It is so frustrating! I am hoping at 60mg that it doesn't get worse. Urinary retention is not something to mess with long term. I'm sure my GP, who prescribed the Nardil, will not be pleased if I tell him about this. He does get a "kick" out of my hyperreflexia, though, pardon the pun.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Take care,
gg

Jasmine, that's great to hear. Nardil's been a miracle for me as well (60mg since Sep.).
But yeah, i have problems with urinary retention alot too. It's such a freaking pain. It's a result of the anticholinergic effects of Nardil. i hate them. Oh well. Good luck and continued happiness.

Has anyone that is using Nardil ever considered or used Klonopin?, factually it: works within 2 hours, has less side effects, less drug interactions, and no food restrictions. I am not anti-nardil or anything but Klonopin is definetly the better first choice. I am not trying to offend any nardil advocates I'm just getting the facts out there.

Thanks and good luck,
John

I am guessing you are referring to using Klonopin instead of Nardil for Social Anxiety. Nardil is also used to treat atypical depression. I'm not sure that Klonopin would work for that.

Nah, that's good advice. In fact for prominent anxiety i definitely think it'd be wiser to try Klonopin before Nardil, for all the reasons you said and esp since you only need a week or so to determine if it's worth it for you or not.
However, as gardenergirl said, if depression is prominent or just as much a problem, Klonopin most likely would not help very much at all-- & might even make it worse. Also even for social anxiety it doesn't tend to be nearly as prosocial as the blessed Nardil is. But good points.

... that you (Tepiaca and Ace) are in a hypomaniac phase ;-) but I'm not a psychiatrist so, enjoy it ! I'm on a Maoi too (Parnate), but it's mixed with an antipsychotic unfortunately. I'm on my day 5 and so far I have been experiencing only the side-effects which I attribute to the antipsychotic ... like somnolence and confusion to say any ... so I'm going to quit it with my psychiatrist approval (he approves anything I want to do though ... a very good fellow) ... So, if you maoi's users have a last-minute suggestion I would really appreciate it

Enjoy floating in the clouds while you can... as with all things too good to be true, this sensation will diminish with time as you adjust to the "new you". The urinary retention is likely to be the result of either reduced efferent parasympathetic activity (anticholinergic effect) or increased alpha adrenergic response due to elevated sympathetic catecholemines such as epinepherine. Make sure to avoid antihistamines and ephedrine-like over the counter substances that can compound the problem. This type of side effect can also effect the GI system such that many people also develop constipation (prolonged transit time) and difficulty having a bowel movement. Make sure to mention any bothersome side effects to your doctor. Glad to hear you're initially having a positive experience with the Nardil.

No factual basis to that comment....People have experienced euphoria FOR YEARS on Nardil...I still feel the euphoria at times, and, at worst I feel OK on Nardil...if people don't screw around with their dosage too much there is no reason why sustained efficacy is not possible...

The above is very good advice. However, one should mention that these side effects CAN, but not necessarily, abate with time....

I really appreciate your input, but I have to say that the reason I sound so excited and happy is not due to some euphoric effect making me "float on clouds". The word I would use is "relief". I'm not overly happy compared to other people, but I am definitely relieved to feel like a normal person again. It's just the joy of not being completely immersed in my hell anymore.

There can be "euphoria" associated with the medication's effect, and for some there may be a dosage-related phase of hypomania, but you would have a difficult time convincing me this could last over the course of several years.

I am referring to the "euphoria" one experiences when they finally find a medication that's efficacious and lifts their mood to a level not previously experienced in, perhaps, years. This type of euphoria subsides with time (assuming the medication is consistently effective) because feeling good becomes the norm, rather than the exception.
