Effexor XR dosage and sexual side effects

Posted by Dirtylowdown4 on January 29, 2004, at 9:51:19

I am a male who has been on 75mg of Effexor XR for several weeks. Has anyone had any experience with increased dosage and the effects on sexual orgasm? Since being on Effexor I have personally experienced delayed orgasm and to a lesser extent the inability to ejaculate. Since I have been plagued with premature ejaculation my entire adult life the delayed ejaculation is a very desirable side effect. I am considering asking my doctor to increase my dosage to combat my depression but am concerned that the increased dosage may result in increased frequency of no ejaculation. Desire and ability to obtain and maintain erection has not been a problem since being on the medication. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Dirtydown, I understand the situation I have been on 150mg for a year and know the feeling. Try fantisizing about things that turn you on. It seems like most the times I have low sex drive is when I have no imagination. Dont listen to the women who say they "dont like sex", because most women would do anything to get away with not having to please there man and expect us to please them everday, not fair. Anyway I have also tried to use Gingko Biloba, or Ginseng supplements. Gingko has been proven to improve blood circulation and Ginseng is said to have aphrodisiac effects. I know some people are against these, but who cares. PEACE,

Ann maybe you dont care about sex because you are now engaged and you dont have too anymore. The reason why the divorce rate is 95% percent in this country is becasue couples dont realize how important sex is. Now I know you dont care about sex, but of course you are convienient to point out that the man has to do what you want. Ask most sex experts, tune into Talk Sex on TV or read any sex experts column and they all will tell you that sex is very, very, very, very very important to maintaining a long lasting relationship.

WHAT wasss that all about?

To dirtylowdown:

In answer to your original question: yes the sexual side effects of Effexor may get worse with increased doseage, but it depends on the person. Usually erection and ejaculation problems can be countered by add Wellbutrin.

To stryker88, I don't think Ann was saying that sex didn't matter, but that in her case, being engaged, she has a caring fiance who understands OR perhaps she isn't interested in premarital sex at this point (Stepping wayyyyy out on a limb here...)

I don't know what you mean by the man having to do what the woman wants, usually the gals feel it's the other way around...

While I agree that sex is important, it's not the only foundation for a good relationship. I've been married for nearly 23 years and sex has been something my wife and I have had a running battle over: I want more, she's satisfied with very little.

The divorce rate is not 95% in the USA, but 50%,, which is bad enough, but it isn't due to sex. There are usually other underlying issues.

A relationship founded primarily for and on sex alone would be shallow and short.

Dirtylowdown, I am male and on 75XR effexor. I get sexual side effects from all SSRI's. Get the ball rolling a day or so before sex. Fantasy, web material, visit the clubs, whatever. Things go very well this way. And sex Is Crucial to a relationship, imo. We have been hard wired for thousands of years to respond to visuals of beautiful women. And it's all because SSRI's were coming ;).
I'll second the Wellbutrin call if you can tolerate it(I could not). Great stuff for the sex drive. Actually pretty friggin amazing stuff for it! Worthless as an AD for me, though. YMMV.

I can only speak from a womans experience. I've gone through 3 dose increases on Effexor. I experience about 1 to 2 weeks of inability to have an orgasm. After that, I return to being able to have one but it does take me much longer to get there.

Sex seems to be an unusual experience while on Effexor XR. After orgasm I wonder if my Serotonin levels go down and the chemical balance in my brain changes because the next day I tend to feel quite strange, such as lower attention level, energy, and desire to do things. It is a weird feeling to be on Effexor and encounter a sexual experience.
