Switching to Remeron for Anxiety

Posted by Machin on January 28, 2004, at 17:19:45

Hi,

I started on Zoloft in Nov/Dec 2002 for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and it did wonders... I felt like a new man. However, I would sweat profusely at night and had to switch to something else. My doctor prescribed Effexor XR in February 2003... started at 37.5 mg, then went up to 75 mg. This was great... sweating was reduced and I only had a slight libido problem. They were both manageable. However, around Sept/Oct 2003 I noticed that the effects were kinda wearing off, and I told my new doctor that I didn't want to increase the dose to screw with my sex drive.

So he switched me to Wellbutrin XL 150mg. Withdrawal from Effexor was pretty bad for 3-4 weeks. Took WB 150mg until about 3 weeks ago. I noticed almost no effect of Wellbutrin, except for a much better sex drive. My doc said that 300mg is average so I increased to it 3 weeks ago. My anxiety has never been worse... I immediately got into a fight with my girlfriend... we made up a few days later, then dumped her for lying to me a week later. I had felt horrible... my anxiety was on full force for almost two straight weeks. Yesterday, I browsed through this forum and found that Wellbutrin is good for depression, but NOT for anxiety--that it can INCREASE anxiety. So, I went to a mental health doc and he prescribed me Remeron 30 mg.

He said that it takes 1 week to fully take effect, doesn't have withdrawal issues, doesn't have sex-drive issues, and helps you sleep better. However, sweating might be present.

I'm skeptical. Can anyone comment?

You will experience most of the anxiolytic and sleep-improving effects at week 1--and full appetite stimulation :). The full antidepressant effect takes at least 2 weeks. For me, Remeron won hands down against the SSRIs for anxiety relief. Unfortunately, the sedation of my autonomic nervous system that its antihistamine effect produced felt like I was taking Seroquel all over again. I'm now on desipramine and Trileptal, and I must say, I'm not any more anxious than I was on Remeron. Go figure.

Good luck!

I've been on 30 mgs. for over 2 years now. It works great for me for depressin and for sleep. Doesn't help much with the anxiety, but hey, it might be worth a try. It doesn't make me sleepy during the day. I take it at night. I haven't gained any weight on it (I have on Zoloft though!). I didn't get any side effects from it,l just a slight headache for the first week or so. Good luck to you!

I would go back to the Good old Zoloft and live with the sweating myself
