pre nardil washout, how long is really necessary?

Posted by Craig Allen on August 10, 2003, at 15:44:17

i'm fighting my way through effexor withdrawal so i can finally give nardil a try. i know the doctors say to be off ssri/snri for 2 weeks before going on an maoi, but i thought i read that this is overly cautious. anyone with experiences or insight, please share.

I agree that two weeks is being a little overly prudent. Just as an example, one of my former doctors (who was quite experienced prescribing MAOIs) said that he never washed out any longer than one week (except with Prozac, of course). And just considering Effexor's relatively short half-life, four or five days should be plenty. But of course, it's all doctor's discretion at this point.

Looks like we are in the same boat - I get to start Nardil tommorow... after 2 weeks of nasty Effexor withdrawl. My doc wouln't budge on the 2 week mark... but I'd say 1 week is probably all that is needed.

thanks for the input. caleb, please keep me posted on your response to the nardil. this is my first day off effexor completely and i'm feeling like i have a bad hangover. it's really rough. anyhow, high hopes for the nardil.

Have you guys ever had even a mild hypertensive crisis on Nardil? If you haven't you would probably not be suggesting less than the two weeks. I had to wait 5 weeks (and I wasn't coming off Prozac--although I don't remember exactly which one it was besides prozac). Believe me a hypertensive crisis will make you wish you had never been born. I've never in my life had a worse headache. So my personal advice is...stick out the two weeks even if it is only precautionary!

oh, i'm taking such a beating with this effexor withdrawal. the only end in sight is starting the nardil, which i was planning to do tomorrow night. that hypertensive crisis doesn't sound good though. maybe i should wait until the end of the week. i don't mean to whine, but this withdrawal is just really uncomfortable.

HELLO IN THERE!!!! They aren't joking when they tell you to wait. I was a paramedic and a ER nurse before I transferred to psych...have you ever seen someone die? Hypertensive crisis is not fun nor is it benign, or a bad day. This is life threatening. You can't possibly be considering speeding up this transition. Sorry for being so blunt but this subject calls for it. leslie

I agree, you should definitely wait the 2 weeks. You don't want to risk anything that could give you a stroke or heart attack. I mean is 1 week in advance worth risking the chance of dying?
